Kien Giang Phu Quoc hotels and resorts are 90% full during New Year's Eve thanks to a sharp increase in international visitors.

According to data from the Mustgo booking platform with 2,000 hotel partners nationwide, the 5-star segment in Phu Quoc with about 700 rooms per facility achieved an average occupancy rate of 80% during the 2024 New Year holiday, as of December 23. The 5-star segment with less than 500 rooms achieved an average occupancy rate of 90%.

Meanwhile, some products with large room numbers such as Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc (1,399 rooms) and Wyndham Garden Grandworld Phu Quoc (921 rooms) reached about 30% occupancy. The villa segment in the north and south of the island has stopped selling from December 30 to January 1.

Mustgo's Commercial Director Dinh Thi Thu Thao commented that Phu Quoc is welcoming a large number of international visitors in both charter and commercial forms during this period. This group of visitors tends to stay at 5-star quality facilities, located in the south or north of the island. However, the number of domestic visitors only accounts for about 20% due to the high airfare, about 7 million VND round trip if departing from Hanoi .

According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation, from December 21 to 23, Phu Quoc welcomed 9-12 international flights per day from Kazakhstan, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Mongolia, Hong Kong (China), Singapore, and the Czech Republic. On December 21 alone, there were two flights carrying Kazakhstani passengers departing from Almaty and Zhambyl to Phu Quoc. On December 22, there were also two flights from Mongolia to Phu Quoc.

A representative of a 5-star hotel in the south of the island said there was a clear increase in the number of Korean visitors thanks to the addition of flights from major airlines such as Korean Air, Jeju Air and Jin Air. Charter flights from Kazakhstan, Poland and the Czech Republic have brought positive signals to Phu Quoc tourism . Taiwan is also a potential segment as commercial and charter flights to Phu Quoc will be restarted in January 2024.

According to Ms. Thao, many accommodation establishments in Phu Quoc are applying a holiday surcharge policy of about 20-30%. With the current situation, Ms. Thao predicts that it is unlikely that accommodation establishments will waive surcharges or reduce prices due to low demand like in previous holidays. During the end of the year, 5-star hotels and resorts also organize many programs and festivals to serve guests.

According to statistics from Premier Village Phu Quoc in 2023, 64% of guests were international guests, an increase of 38% compared to 2022. New World Phu Quoc Resort recorded international guests accounting for 70%, an increase of 30% compared to the previous year.

Previously, according to reporters, many tourism businesses in Phu Quoc are changing their communication methods to reach international visitors, especially Korean visitors. A representative of JW Marriott Phu Quoc said they are focusing on markets such as China, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan. They are taking advantage of campaigns on platforms such as Naver and Kakao (Korea) and Taiwan's Line Ads during the Lunar New Year to ensure strategic reach.

Other methods used include translating all promotional materials into multiple languages, especially English and Korean; continuously training staff in English to communicate with customers. In addition, understanding customer habits in each region is also emphasized, for example, Korean customers are interested in activities with local imprints, while Western customers are more inclined towards nature exploration activities.

"Phu Quoc has a lot of potential but is still new so it needs a lot of promotion. Over time, business people can see opportunities from many markets, both in Asia and the world," said a representative of Movenpick Resort Waverly Phu Quoc.
