It is expected that Phu Quoc International Airport will have a total planning area of about 1,050 hectares, with an investment capital of about VND 26,572 billion by 2030, and a vision to 2050 requiring an additional VND 25,791 billion.

According to the project presentation, before APEC 2027, Phu Quoc Airport will be expanded with a target capacity of 18 million passengers/year, 4.5 times higher than the current capacity (4 million passengers/year). The target by 2050 is to upgrade the airport to a capacity of 50 million passengers/year.

In addition to the existing runway, the airport will build a new runway No. 2. The two runways are 3,500m and 3,300m long, respectively, ensuring the port's efficient and safe operations, serving wide-body aircraft and long international flights.

In addition, the aircraft parking lot has been expanded with 70-80 parking positions, meeting the earliest goal of welcoming heads of state and senior leaders at the APEC 2027 event and ensuring the organization needs for many international events of Phu Quoc in the future.

The highlight of Phu Quoc International Airport is the passenger terminal. This place was built based on the idea of a phoenix spreading its wings, symbolizing the national status and national pride. The terminal is also equipped with the most modern operating technology in the world , including check-in without going to the airport, automatic baggage sorting, biometric identification technology that helps reduce the time for exit and entry to 15-30 seconds/person...

In particular, the VVIP terminal of Phu Quoc International Airport will be newly built, with the goal of becoming a standard place to welcome heads of state. The project was designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, the “father” of the iconic Cau Hon project in Phu Quoc. The design of the terminal is inspired by the sea eagle fish, symbolizing freedom and flexibility in the ocean.

In addition, the planning of Phu Quoc International Airport also adds auxiliary works such as: cargo terminal, radar system...

Speaking at the conference announcing the Phu Quoc International Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, held on May 9, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam Uong Viet Dung said: “The newly approved planning is an important basis for Kien Giang province to implement synchronous investment projects and modernize the infrastructure of Phu Quoc International Airport. Thereby, it will not only contribute to the successful organization of APEC 2027 but also promote the development of Phu Quoc city to become a leading attractive destination in the region.”

The simultaneous implementation of strategic projects, including a plan to increase airport capacity to 18 million passengers/year before APEC 2027, has affirmed the role of Phu Quoc island city as a new growth pole, opening up opportunities for strong development and attracting sustainable investment.
