Hongyancun Metro Station in Chongqing, China is 116m deep and the high air pressure difference causes passengers' ears to ring as they take the elevator down to the station.
Pressure-induced ear popping is a common occurrence when we experience sudden changes in altitude, such as when an airplane takes off or lands. This is unlikely to happen in subway stations, as they are not deep or steep enough to affect the ears. However, taking the elevator down to the world's deepest subway station can actually cause your ears to pop. That's because the station is 116 meters underground.
Hongyancun Station is located between Jingwei Avenue and Shabin Road in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing. The city is known for its hilly landscape, with steep winding roads that rise and fall, and it was this feature that led to the creation of the world's deepest subway system. Because of the rugged terrain, workers had to dig very deep to connect the new station to the city's subway lines. The station is due to be completed in 2022.
Because of its impressive depth, Hongyancun Station has quickly become a tourist attraction in Chongqing. Some people visit the city just to get to the bottom of Hongyancun Station via eight large escalators or modern elevators. It takes 53 seconds to get to Hongyancun Station by elevator and more than 10 minutes by escalator.
Before the Hongyancun station was inaugurated, the title of the deepest metro station in the world belonged to Arsenalna station of the Kyiv Metro line.
