AI Perplexity Raises More Funding for AI Battle

Perplexity AI Inc., which makes an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search engine that competes with tech giant Google, has raised more capital in a deal that values the startup at $18 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Perplexity AI raised $100 million in this round. The deal is an expansion of a previous round a few months ago that valued Perplexity AI at $14 billion.

These investments show the increasingly fierce race by Silicon Valley - home to the headquarters of the world's leading technology corporations - to provide financial resources to support leading AI startups.

Perplexity declined to comment on the report. The Financial Times previously reported some details of the deal.

Founded in 2022, Perplexity has emerged as one of the most prominent businesses using generative AI to reshape core internet services.

In 2024, the startup tripled its valuation from $1 billion to $3 billion and then tripled it again a few months later.

In March, Bloomberg reported that Perplexity was looking to raise up to $1 billion at an $18 billion valuation, including the money raised in the round, before moving forward with a smaller investment at a $14 billion valuation. The new cash puts Perplexity back at its original valuation target./.
