Recently, Tra Que vegetable village (Quang Nam) was listed in the list of 55 "Best Tourist Villages in the World" in 2024 voted by the United Nations Tourism Organization, and is also the only representative of Vietnam to win this award.
Formed in the 16th century, 3 km from Hoi An ancient town, 20 km from Da Nang. Tra Que vegetable village is located on an island, surrounded by Co Co river and Tra Que lagoon. Here, the alluvial soil mixed with sand, the climate is mild, so people have developed a long-standing organic vegetable growing profession.
Previously, vegetable gardens were planted between houses, and the fields were uneven because people dug ponds to get water for irrigation. More than 20 years ago, the government planned to develop tourism, houses were relocated, ponds were filled in to create square vegetable fields, and the roads were straight.
Tra Que currently has 202 households, with 326 farmers, cultivating an area of 18 hectares. People specialize in growing 20 types of crops, and every day the village welcomes thousands of tourists to visit and experience. In April 2022, vegetable growing in Tra Que was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, belonging to the category of folk knowledge and traditional handicrafts.
Farmers in the village use seaweed from rivers and lagoons, manure, and do not use chemicals or pesticides. Vegetables are guaranteed to be clean, safe for consumers' health, and environmentally friendly.
Every day, Tra Que opens its doors to visitors with an entrance fee of 35,000 VND per person. Visitors can walk or cycle around the fields. The best time to visit is early morning or cool afternoon, to avoid the heat and see the scene of laborers working in the fields.
At the garden, visitors experience the stages of growing vegetables with the guidance of local people.
In Tra Que, people maintain indigenous vegetable varieties that have existed for hundreds of years. The outstanding characteristics of traditional varieties are delicious, suitable for the soil, few pests, and stable productivity.
Tourists excitedly used shoulder poles and two buckets of water to water each row of vegetables.
Legend has it that around the 18th century, a king was traveling on the De Vong River and stopped by the village, enjoying a type of vegetable that tasted like tea and spicy like cinnamon, so he named the vegetable village Tra Que. The vegetables grown here have a more fragrant smell than those grown in other areas.
In the village, there are also historical relics such as Tho Than temple, Ngu Hanh temple, Nguyen Van Dien's tomb, Cau Bong worship custom, along with customs, beliefs, and culinary culture that are being preserved and promoted effectively.
Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam shared that Tra Que being recognized as "The best tourist village in the world" in 2024 will contribute to honoring the value, spreading the brand and promoting tourism of Hoi An, Quang Nam to international visitors.
