Khanh Hoa: Unable to completely handle the leachate situation from Ru Ri landfill

Leachate from Ru Ri landfill flows through canals and ditches, is pitch black, has a foul odor, and seriously affects the lives of people living around the area.

Previously, SGGP Newspaper reported "Water treatment plant pollutes water sources?".

In recent days, heavy rain has continued, causing black, foul-smelling leachate from the old Ru Ri landfill (Luong Hoa village, Vinh Luong commune, Nha Trang city) to continue to flow down to residential areas below and into the sea, polluting the environment and affecting people's lives.

Black water from the landfill flows down the canal

According to local residents, when it rains heavily, the water in the canals rises and mixes with leachate, making the water black and causing a very unpleasant smell. If Nha Trang continues to have heavy rains in the coming days, this water is likely to flood into people's homes.

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Vinh (a resident of Vinh Luong commune) said: “We have been living with wastewater here for too long. Occasionally, the environmental sanitation department comes to use lime to temporarily treat it, but after a short time, everything goes back to the way it was. The groundwater here cannot be used anymore.”

Residents near the estuary also said that heavy rains have caused leachate to continue to flow into residential areas, combined with rising tides that have prevented the leachate from draining away, pushing it up into the ditches surrounding the residential area.

According to the report of Nha Trang City Public Service Management Board, the old Ru Ri landfill is an open-air landfill with outdated technology and no bottom lining, so leachate still exists and flows into the environment for a long time.

Since the Ru Ri landfill was closed, in the dry season, leachate is less produced, sometimes there is none, so all leachate is thoroughly collected. However, in the rainy season, leachate is mixed with rainwater and groundwater, flowing into the outside environment through streams to residential areas.

A representative of Vinh Luong Commune People's Committee said that recently, the locality held a meeting with relevant units to find a solution to collect and thoroughly treat leachate from Ru Ri landfill.

Temporary treatment with lime powder

As an immediate solution, Nha Trang City People's Committee has assigned Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company to preside over and coordinate with Vinh Luong Commune People's Committee to regularly use lime powder and deodorizing microorganisms to limit odors and reduce the color of leachate in residential areas in Vinh Luong Commune.

Nha Trang City Public Service Management Board has also proposed and reported to the City People's Committee for permission to upgrade the existing leachate pipeline to meet the current leachate collection and treatment needs; and permission to purchase HDPE tarpaulin to cover the surface of Luong Hoa landfill, limiting the amount of rainwater entering the landfill.
