The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that around January 8-9, cold air will begin to affect the weather in the northern provinces, then expand to the North and North Central regions.

Due to the influence of cold air on the night of January 8 and January 9, mountainous and midland areas of the North will have scattered rain, and in the plains there will be rain in some places. The sky will become cloudy and gloomy, ending the long dry spell.

It is forecasted that on January 8, the temperature will decrease by 2-3 degrees compared to the previous day. On January 9-10, the temperature will decrease sharply, the plains will be cold both day and night with the lowest temperature around 10-12 degrees, the highest temperature around 18-20 degrees.

The mountainous and midland areas of the North on January 9-10 will have severe cold with the lowest temperature falling below 10 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature from 14-16 degrees Celsius.

In Hanoi, the capital city, January 8-9, the sky will be cloudy with light rain, with temperatures ranging from 16-22 degrees Celsius. On January 10, the sky will be cloudy with no rain, with temperatures ranging from 14-19 degrees Celsius.

In the North and Central Central regions, due to the influence of cold air combined with the windward terrain of the Truong Son mountain range, from about January 9-12, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind. From January 10-12, this area will turn cold.

Cold air forecast in January

Northern region, Thanh Hoa : rain in some places; scattered rain in mountainous and midland areas on the night of January 8-9. Cold weather, severe cold in mountainous areas of the North.

North and Central Central regions: from about January 9-12, there will be scattered rain and thunderstorms in some places. Cold at night and in the morning; from January 10-12, it will be cold.

Other areas: scattered showers and thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are likely to produce tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.

Forecasting the temperature trend in January, the meteorological agency said that the average temperature nationwide will be approximately the same as the average of many years during the same period.

Notably, in January 2025, cold air tends to be more active than in December 2024. There is a high possibility that strong northeast monsoon will cause many days of severe cold in the northern provinces of Vietnam, concentrated in the period of mid-January 2025.

Severe cold, with the risk of frost and ice, has a major impact on livestock, crops and people's health, especially in the northern mountainous areas.

Previously, in December 2024, there were 3 cold spells on December 6, December 11 and December 27. Notably, the cold spell on December 11 caused widespread cold weather in the Northern region on December 14-15 and from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh provinces on December 15; especially in the mountainous areas of the North, the weather was extremely cold.

The lowest temperature in the above cold air mass in the North and North Central regions is generally from 11 - 14 degrees Celsius, in mountainous areas it is below 7 degrees Celsius such as: Sapa (Lao Cai) 6 degrees Celsius, Dong Van (Ha Giang) 5.2 degrees Celsius, Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc) 6.2 degrees Celsius, Trung Khanh (Cao Bang) 5.6 degrees Celsius, Mau Son (Lang Son) 3.2 degrees Celsius...
