Sweet potato season, price drops to 3,500 VND/kg

In Gia Lai, the purchase price of Japanese yellow sweet potatoes at the beginning of the season was 10,000 VND/kg, now it is only 3,500 VND/kg, farmers have to reluctantly sell potatoes below cost.

Faced with the situation of falling sweet potato prices while unharvested output is still too large, the government has had to call for "rescue".

On April 4, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Trinh Van Sang, Chairman of Phu Thien District People's Committee, said that in the area, there are still many areas growing Japanese sweet potatoes that are having trouble finding an outlet and prices are falling.

Accordingly, in the winter-spring crop, this district planted nearly 3,500 hectares of Japanese sweet potatoes, concentrated in the communes of Chu A Thai, Ia Sol, and Ia Piar.

With an average yield of 20 tons/ha, the total estimated sweet potato output this crop is about 68,800 tons.

It is known that at the beginning of the season, the purchase price of sweet potatoes was 10,000 VND/kg, but in recent days, the price has continuously decreased, now only 3,500 VND/kg. At this price, farmers are selling potatoes below cost (5,000 VND/kg).

According to the People's Committee of Phu Thien district, currently the price of sweet potatoes has decreased, traders are buying in moderation, making it difficult to find outlets for sweet potatoes. Meanwhile, the remaining area ready for harvest is very large, about 1,614 hectares.

The reason for the sharp decline in sweet potato prices is that the consumption market is not stable, China has reduced its purchases. Meanwhile, the planting area in the whole region has increased, leading to difficulties in output.

Faced with the above situation, the district government requested the authorities of Gia Lai province to pay attention and call on businesses to participate in consuming sweet potatoes for the people.

At the same time, calling for investment in sweet potato processing and consumption factories in the area to ensure long-term output for farmers./.
