(HG) - Based on observations in many low-lying rice fields in the province, farmers are unable to cultivate the autumn-winter rice crop. Therefore, in recent days, they have fenced off their rice fields with nylon nets and flooded them with water to raise fish.

In areas where the autumn-winter rice crop is not being cultivated, farmers are currently busy fencing off areas with nets and releasing fish fry.

According to farmers, the rice paddy fish farming model requires minimal care and low investment costs. Farmers only need to buy nets and fish fry; they don't need to spend money on fish feed because the fish forage for food in the fields, such as straw and leftover rice from the previous crop. Some of the fish species chosen by farmers in Hau Giang to raise in their rice paddies include carp, tilapia, hybrid catfish, and yellow catfish. On average, farmers stock 2-3 kg of fish fry per 1,000 square meters of rice paddy. After 4 months of farming, they harvest the fish, with an average yield of 50-60 kg of marketable fish per hectare.

According to the provincial agricultural sector, during this year's flood season, the entire province aims to achieve a rice paddy fish farming area of ​​7,500 hectares, exceeding the initial plan by 2,000 hectares. Regarding production, the target is to reach over 11,600 tons of commercial fish, exceeding the initial plan by nearly 2,000 tons.
