Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan also requested local leaders to grasp the situation of traders purchasing rice, avoid traders reneging on deposits and forcing farmers to pay lower prices; and have plans to support businesses with enough finance to purchase rice from people.
On March 1, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan chaired an online meeting with the three provinces of An Giang , Dong Thap and Ca Mau on the situation of production and business, public investment, infrastructure construction and import and export.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Le Minh Hoan requested An Giang, Dong Thap and Ca Mau provinces to focus on implementing the Project on sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission specialized rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta. Research specific solutions to improve land quality and increase crop productivity.
Minister Le Minh Hoan also requested local leaders to grasp the situation of traders purchasing rice, avoid traders reneging on deposits and forcing farmers to pay lower prices; and have plans to support businesses with enough finance to purchase rice from people.
Previously, on February 28, SGGP Newspaper published an article titled “Rice prices drop sharply: Traders abandon deposits, farmers scramble to find outlets”, reflecting that after the Lunar New Year, in the Mekong Delta, rice prices dropped sharply, in some places dropping by more than VND1,500/kg. Hundreds of thousands of hectares of winter-spring rice in the Mekong Delta are ready for harvest, but in many places traders abandon deposits, making it difficult for farmers to find outlets. To avoid risks and losses, many farmers are forced to sell rice at low prices.
