In the list of 25 countries with the most embassies, China leads with 173 embassies around the world , surpassing the US (168). Other powers such as France (158) and the UK (156) ranked third and fourth respectively; Japan (152) made the top five. In the top 10 are: Germany (148), Turkey (145), Russia (143), Brazil (135), India (135). The rest of the list in order includes: Italy, Spain, South Korea, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Canada, South Africa, Indonesia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Pakistan, Argentina, Hungary and Sweden.
The index also notes some important findings. For example, China has a larger diplomatic presence in Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, while the US leads in the Americas, Europe and South Asia. This reflects the trade and economic relationship between the two superpowers.

Meanwhile, Türkiye and India have developed the most diplomatic networks in recent years. Interestingly, both countries have prioritized Africa in their new outreach. In fact, India is a major export destination for many African countries.
Russia has closed 14 foreign missions since the conflict with Ukraine in 2022, falling two places in the rankings from 2017 to 2022.
Australia ranks 26th in the Global Diplomacy Index 2024 with 124 embassies worldwide, reflecting Australia's continued underinvestment in diplomacy relative to its economic weight.
