Chau Son Monastery, also known as Chau Son Holy Mother Monastery (village 6, Phu Son commune, Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh province), is considered a Western Catholic church in Vietnam with a pure spiritual space, ancient and romantic beauty, attracting a large number of tourists to visit.

It is known that Chau Son Monastery began in 1936, when Bishop Dom Marie Jean Baptiste Nguyen Ba Tong decided to establish a new monastery in Chau Son mountain area (Ninh Binh).

Also in 1936, the foundation stone laying ceremony was held, marking the beginning of the construction project. Although there were many difficulties due to the rugged terrain and lack of materials, however, with the constant efforts of the monks and the support of the local people, Chau Son Monastery gradually emerged.
After nearly 4 years of construction, Chau Son Monastery was officially inaugurated. Since then, this place has become an important spiritual center, attracting a large number of believers and tourists to visit and worship.
Ancient and peaceful monastery
Visiting Chau Son Monastery (Ninh Binh Province), visitors will be overwhelmed by the European-style architectural space. The unplastered red brick walls, soaring domes, and colorful stained glass windows… create an ancient picture, bearing a strong historical mark.

In particular, the system of pillars is designed into small towers extending from the base to the top, creating a unique feature for the building. Inside the monastery, the sanctuary is spacious and airy with many rows of towering pillars and beautiful stained glass paintings.
The Gothic-style cathedral is 64 m long, 20 m wide, 21 m high, built in an East-West direction, with surrounding walls up to 0.6 m thick, and columns 1.2 m thick, creating warmth in winter and coolness in summer.
The white dome is the pinnacle of architectural art in the heart of the cathedral. That is what makes the sanctuary stand out with its masterpieces of colored reliefs, symbols of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, the Saints…

The grounds surrounding the cathedral are extremely airy, with Fantima Garden featuring green lawns, clear lakes decorated with southern rocks and artificial egg-shaped rocks.
Paintings depicting Jesus, a man carrying a cross praying, Jacob's laterite well underground and the Calvary behind Chau Son Monastery... All create a quiet, solemn monastery like a place of contemplation in a fairy tale of Europe.

It is known that on weekdays, the monastery limits tourists so visitors will not be allowed to visit. On occasions when there is a mass at the beginning of the month, the church will open for visitors after the prayer time.
Specifically, in the morning from 8:00-10:00 (Sunday to 10:00); Afternoon from 14:30-16:30 (Sunday from 15:30-16:30) except during Lent (around March) and the retreat around the beginning of August.
