Experience in reviewing for the ability assessment exam of the valedictorian with 129/150 points

Thanks to his extensive education and mastery of textbook knowledge, Nguyen Dang Huy won 129/150 points on the Hanoi National University's aptitude test, surpassing 44,000 other candidates.

Dang Huy is a 12th grade student at Yen Lac High School, Vinh Phuc Province. In the competency assessment test on April 8, Huy scored 129/150 points. Of which, the scores for Math, Language and Science were 47, 42 and 40 points respectively.

According to the Hanoi National University Examination Center, after four rounds of exams with a total of about 44,000 candidates participating, this is the highest score. From the 120-point mark, only 5 students nationwide achieved it.

"This result helps me reduce pressure before the upcoming high school graduation exam," Huy said.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Thuong, Huy's father, said he was very happy with his son's results. Due to work conditions, he and his wife mainly encouraged their son to study on his own.

"Huy still helps with housework every day because his father is busy doing carpentry and his mother works as a seamstress. He has mainly studied at home for many years and has not gone to extra classes," said Mr. Thuong.

Huy registered for the competency assessment test in April with the desire to "fight quickly, win quickly" to focus on the graduation exam.

Being strong in Math and Natural Sciences , I spend more time reviewing Social Sciences (History, Geography) and Languages.

In the Language section, Dang Huy sees that unlike the Literature section, this section requires a lot of Vietnamese knowledge such as word types and spelling. Therefore, Huy decided to relearn the theory of gerunds, compound words, and reduplicated words. In addition, this section also has a reading comprehension format, similar to English exams, students need to practice their ability to concentrate when reading to find the correct material.

For History and Geography, Huy attended a 10-session course to reinforce his knowledge outside of class time.

Looking at the sample questions and researching information, the male student also knew that the real exam would focus heavily on practical application. Huy diligently read relevant documents in all subjects online, watched the news, practiced previous years' exam questions and from the Yen Lac Examination Club's question bank compiled by teachers in the school.

However, Huy does not stay up late. He concentrates on listening to lectures and tries to understand the lesson right in class, and when he gets home, he only studies until about 10:30 p.m. and then goes to bed. According to Huy, staying up late and trying to study will make him tired and affect his performance the next day.

About two weeks before the exam, Huy spends 2-4 days for each subject to review his knowledge and memorize important points, mostly History and Geography.

On April 8, after finishing the competency assessment test, Huy recognized that his preparation had achieved good results. In all three sections of Language, Mathematics and Science, knowledge spanned many grades, with theory accounting for about 60%.

In the Language section, there were many questions about choosing different types of words and choosing authors. Thanks to his basic knowledge, Huy did well on the test.

For Math, Huy said the difficulty level was equivalent to the high school graduation exam questions of previous years, not challenging for candidates.

"The most difficult part for me was the integration part. The most common part on the exam was the extreme values of functions and volume ratios," Huy said, regretting that he didn't have enough time to do it more thoroughly while Math is his strength.

For the Natural Sciences section (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Huy said the exam questions were also part of the curriculum. Because he often found many different ways to solve the questions when reviewing, the male student easily passed this section.

Meanwhile, History and Geography are still the parts that Huy has the most difficulty with.

"I mainly reviewed content related to Vietnam, but the test had many questions about history and current events in the world," Huy said. Therefore, the male student believes that candidates need to read more to gain knowledge about both domestic and foreign fields.

In the exam room, each candidate has a different exam code. Huy's way of doing the test is to calmly skim through the entire exam to identify the type of question, doing it from easy to difficult. With a question that is too difficult, Huy realizes that he should accept to skip it instead of staying there forever, to save time for the remaining questions.

"There are a lot of questions so I try not to waste time, make the most of it to do the test and check the results after finishing," Huy said.

In general, Huy thinks that to do well on the Hanoi National University's aptitude test, one needs to study extensively and regularly.

"The test is not tricky. You have to know almost all the knowledge and should not miss any part of the textbook," Huy said.

The male student plans to use his aptitude test score to apply for admission to the Information Technology major at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
