Two days after being admitted to the hospital, Mr. LVB (63 years old, Vinh Long province) had a headache, dizziness, and high blood pressure, so his family took him to Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital for examination. Immediately after receiving the patient, the on-duty medical team assessed that the patient had signs of an acute stroke, so they activated Code Stroke (emergency stroke procedure).
The patient was immediately ordered a brain CT scan, the results showed subarachnoid hemorrhage due to rupture of aneurysm measuring 05 x 05mm.
The assessment showed that the ruptured cerebral aneurysm was progressing badly, threatening the patient's life. The team of doctors agreed to apply the method of sealing the ruptured aneurysm with a metal coil (Coil) under the digital subtraction angiography (DSA) machine. The intervention team inserted a small catheter (diameter about 1.8mm) from the femoral artery to the damaged cerebral artery; approached the cerebral aneurysm and performed embolization to seal the aneurysm with a coil under the digital subtraction angiography (DSA) system.
The intervention lasted about 1 hour. After 5 days of intervention, the patient's condition recovered almost completely, he was alert, no longer weak, and has now been discharged for outpatient follow-up.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Thai, Head of the Department of Cardiology - Endovascular Intervention, Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital, said that stroke is a dangerous condition that can leave severe neurological sequelae, even death, if not treated promptly. Stroke includes two types: cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction. Compared to cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage is less common and has a higher mortality rate.
The time from the appearance of stroke symptoms to the start of treatment is extremely important. This is called the “golden hour” which determines the patient’s life as well as minimizing brain damage. The golden hour in stroke is less than 3 hours.
To control stroke effectively and optimize treatment costs, the time for emergency treatment and stroke treatment within the “golden hour” is a prerequisite. Therefore, when a patient has any signs of suspected stroke, they should immediately go to the nearest specialized stroke center for the fastest diagnosis and treatment.
