Student Discipline: 3 Stories of 'No Other Choice' School Suspension

Draft circular regulating rewards and discipline for students, replacing the highest form of discipline, expulsion, with a requirement to write a self-criticism.

There are many controversial opinions surrounding this regulation in the draft circular regulating rewards and discipline for students. A friend of mine shared: "From my own experience, I see that most "disobedient" students lack love. What needs to be done for them is love, comfort, and sympathy from teachers. Discipline is the last solution, after teachers have discussed thoroughly with them. I believe that if teachers listen to students share, sometimes teachers will realize their own indifference". However, a friend also commented: "The saying 'love the elephant and put the basket in the basket' is no longer there, teacher!", "And after ... writing a self-criticism, everything is back to normal" ...

As a teacher and having spent many years managing a high school, I have many stories surrounding student discipline.

Student fighting is becoming more and more common in schools.

Story One

That year, as the principal of a high school, I received a report from my students that a group of 10th grade female students were fighting, a male student recorded it and posted it on YouTube (at that time, TikTok and Facebook were not used much by students).

Watching the clip, all the teachers and I were shocked. It was the first time we teachers saw directly female students fighting, tearing their shirts, and hitting them with helmets. Local leaders, parents, and teachers asked me to take strong action. I was worried, expelling them for a week was "light", but expelling them for a year - I didn't want that. Luckily, at that time, the school was teaching according to the curriculum, the regulations allowed "forced expulsion for a limited period". Holding on to that "lifeline", I decided to stop the students from studying for 30 days. During the time off, the students went to school but were not allowed to enter the classroom, but gathered at the Youth Union office to clean the school, write reports, copy lessons (brought down by classmates)...

During a test, I asked the teacher to give me extra guidance and allow the students to take the test with their classmates. Although some teachers disagreed with this form of discipline, I still think it was the right decision. As a result, these students were able to continue their studies, go on to grade 12, and graduate.

Story two

One year, right after the opening ceremony, I received news that an 11th grade male student had made a clip "posted" on YouTube with vulgar words, offensive images, and badmouthing a world-famous band. The school's email inbox at that time continuously received letters from the band's fans. At that time, I felt the pressure from social networks. I thought if I let that student go to school now, would he be safe because there were too many threats. I temporarily let him stay home for a few days to ensure his safety, and give the school time to resolve the matter so that "everything is peaceful inside and out".

Story three

"Sit down here, I'm talking to you!", that's what a student said right in class, during class, when the teacher "pressed" him with questions related to the lesson.

Let's ask, if the teacher and student meet the student the next day, what will happen? It is necessary to have a quiet moment, so although I have no choice, I decided to let this student stop going to school for a day or two to let both sides calm down. The "medicine" of just going to school and writing a self-criticism is not appropriate in this case.

Student discipline: Needs cooperation between family and society

Schools always need the cooperation of families and society in educating students. If it is necessary to let students stay home from school for a while, this is the time for the local authorities to step in. Villages, residential groups, unions and associations actively roll up their sleeves to help the school, and disciplined students are gradually reformed and change themselves.

Along with that is family responsibility. When a child is sick, parents ask for leave from work (and are given leave) to take care of them. So, when a child is disciplined and expelled from school for a few days, why don’t parents ask for leave to be with their child at that time? If there is close cooperation and connection between the school, parents, and local authorities when a student is expelled, the story, although bitter, will have a humane ending.

So teaching people sometimes requires "whipping" and perseverance. Each student's negative challenge is different. Some students like sweet talk, some like to be praised, some want to show off, and some need to be strong to obey their teachers. I believe, and through more than 40 years of teaching, not all students improve by writing a self-criticism.

Student discipline: "Taking short-term to sustain long-term"

There is a concern that expelling students will cause them to not return to school. But, will that lead to them dropping out of school? When there is a profound impact on students, even if they do not return to school (after being expelled), they still have other learning opportunities.

Self-study, study at vocational education centers - continuing education, every locality (commune, ward) has a community learning center. When children know how to stand up, do it again, with the help of everyone, continuing to study is possible.

Education from the past to the present is a blend of praise and criticism, rewards and punishments, kindness and blame, tolerance and strictness. Applying these "pairs of categories" requires schools to always learn on their own, good principals to manage the school, and teachers to be both competent and responsible, with dedication.

It is difficult to discipline students for violations, but it is more difficult to coordinate education. If we are lax and careless, then after writing self-criticisms (when disciplined), we will "voluntarily" request to leave school. Disciplining students cannot come from subjective imposition, lacking practical and scientific basis. Therefore, in the current context, regulations on forms of student discipline should also be considered "taking the short term to support the long term".

Poll

Do you support the abolition of expulsion for students who violate discipline?

You can select 1 item. Your vote will be public.

Students should not be disciplined by expelling them.

The most severe form of discipline should still be expulsion if students violate discipline.

Students who violate school rules should not be expelled, but they should be sent to do community service and clean public toilets. School violence, depending on the severity, should be handled according to the law.
