In the rapid chess event, Vietnam has two representatives, Lai Ly Huynh and Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang. Our main opponents are players from China, Hong Kong (China), Singapore and Chinese Taipei. Rapid chess is considered Lai Ly Huynh's forte and the number 1 player in Vietnam showed impressive performance when he won 6 games and drew 3 games, with 15 points, winning the gold medal. A Malaysian player won the silver medal, while Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang won the bronze medal.
This is Lai Ly Huynh's second consecutive rapid chess world championship title. Last year, the Ca Mau-born player won the world championship in Malaysia. This title can be considered a consolation for Lai Ly Huynh after he lost in the final match of the standard chess - the most prestigious event of the world tournament. In this match, Lai Ly Huynh created a huge advantage over Meng Chen (China) in the endgame and was almost certain to win the championship. However, unreasonable calculations at the decisive moments caused Lai Ly Huynh to be held to a draw by his opponent. Entering the following rapid chess game, the Vietnamese player admitted defeat to his opponent. In any case, the silver medal in standard chess is also Ly Huynh's first individual world medal in his career.
