Passion fruit season, good price

The garden of more than 3 hectares of Mr. Le Van Minh's family (residing in Tan Dinh village, Tan An commune, Dak Po district) is covered with green passion fruit trees. Temporarily stopping the harvest, Mr. Minh shared: "Seeing many families in the area have high income from growing passion fruit, in 2023, Mr. Minh decided to grow this tree. After renovating 2 hectares of land, his family invested in land preparation, trellis construction and bought passion fruit varieties to plant. Thanks to its suitability to the soil and weather, the RP8 passion fruit variety by Thong Do International Joint Stock Company grows quickly, bears fruit, and increases the income of Mr. Minh's family. "My family is harvesting the third passion fruit crop with a yield of 50-90 tons of fruit/crop. In the previous 2 crops, my family had an income of more than 2 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the remaining 500-600 million VND. This year, the family harvested 40 tons of fruit, selling for 14 to 45 thousand VND/kg depending on the type," Mr. Minh confided.

At the garden in An Thanh commune, Mr. Tran Minh Hai's family (residing in residential group 2, Dak Po town, Dak Po district) is also harvesting passion fruit. Mr. Hai said: "This season, thanks to careful care, my family's 3 sao of passion fruit have produced large and evenly ripened fruits. Since the beginning of the season, my family's passion fruit has been purchased for export to Europe. At the beginning of the season, the selling price was more than 30,000 VND/kg, and now it is 45,000 VND/kg. Hopefully the market price will stabilize so that we can feel secure in cultivating."

According to Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Po district, Truong Thi Thien Ly: Currently, there are 10 households that have cooperated to grow passion fruit with Hung Thom Gia Lai Agricultural and Service Cooperative (Mang Yang district). Being instructed on planting techniques, care and supply of quality seeds, and having products purchased at reasonable prices, these households have a fairly high income from growing passion fruit. To meet the needs of domestic and foreign markets in the coming time, especially when a business proposes to invest in a local processing factory, the district encourages people to cooperate to grow passion fruit to have a high and stable source of income. However, the district also recommends and propagates that people should not arbitrarily expand the area massively.

Expectations for passion fruit exports to the US market

In addition to the current selling price of 14,000 to 45,000 VND/kg, the news that the US will import passion fruit from our country is attracting the attention of many people. “Through the media, I know that passion fruit is about to be imported to the US. This will expand the market, creating opportunities to increase income for people. I have also just planted 1 more hectare of passion fruit. With the current price, after only one crop, my family will recover the initial investment and have a stable income,” said Mr. Le Van Minh.

Mr. Ma Van Tinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kbang district - said: There are currently about 240 hectares of passion fruit growing in the area. The district is coordinating with a company to link with the people by supporting seeds and purchasing products with a minimum selling price of 8,000 VND/kg of passion fruit. Through research, passion fruit is currently exported to 20 countries around the world . This has a great impact on increasing income for the people in the area. If in the near future, the market is stable, especially new markets such as the US and Australia, the area of passion fruit growing in the district will expand.

Mr. Le Van Tuyen - General Director of Thong Do International Joint Stock Company - informed: Currently, the Company's high-quality seedling center is supplying 25 million seedlings/year to people nationwide. Access to the US and Australian markets opens up many export opportunities for products from our country's passion fruit trees. For the Company, this is an opportunity to expand production and increase profits. If people expand their planting area, the Company will provide quality seed sources to help them earn higher incomes. In addition, the Company also hopes that the authorities will strengthen the inspection and handling of facilities producing poor-quality and fake seeds, to minimize damage to seedling production companies as well as the people.
