Walking along many streets in Ha Dong district, Hanoi , it's not difficult to spot trees being used as poles for hanging banners and advertisements. In some places, these "green lungs" are tightly wrapped with flashing lights, or even nailed to the trees to create makeshift hangers.
In some food districts, many restaurants place honeycomb charcoal stoves and industrial gas stoves right under trees for cooking… Notably, in some places, trees are even being killed by methods such as sealing the base with cement, pouring boiling water or chemicals into the trunk, and cutting the roots… This situation is quite common and occurs at all times of the year.
To raise community awareness in protecting trees and the environment, every year Ha Dong district has instructed and encouraged wards to launch campaigns to educate and handle cases of environmental violations, such as hanging banners and flags in violation of regulations, affecting the environment and urban civility.
Furthermore, the Ha Dong district authorities have leveraged the advantages of social media, with wards establishing chat groups on applications like Zalo and Facebook to promptly exchange information and resolve residents' concerns regarding urban order and environmental sanitation. Whenever a group member reports environmental pollution or accumulated waste, district leaders immediately direct relevant agencies to coordinate with the ward to address the issue.
A resident of Van Phuc ward said: "We have witnessed many campaigns and heard the ward's loudspeakers and propaganda teams talking about maintaining security and order, protecting the environment, and combating the illegal hanging of banners, posters, and advertising signs, but it only lasts a few days before things go back to how they were."

In my opinion, in order to protect the urban landscape and civility, and preserve the "green lungs" of the city, besides dealing with violations, each citizen needs to take responsibility for protecting green spaces, actively planting trees around their homes, and seriously condemning acts of destroying trees in public places and on sidewalks.
