Worried about sand spilling onto the road to Mui Ne National Tourist Area

In recent days, after heavy rain, red sand from the high hills continued to flow down the key coastal road leading to Mui Ne National Tourist Area (Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province). This situation has been going on since 2024 but has not been completely resolved, affecting the lives of locals and tourists.

Recently, at the end of May 2025, after a prolonged heavy rain, flood water and a large amount of red sand from the high hills continued to rush down Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street (in Quarter 1, Ham Tien Ward, Phan Thiet City), causing localized flooding. Red sand and water also flooded into roadside shops, causing property damage and affecting the businesses of local households.

Flood water and red sand from the high hills flowed down the coastal road to Mui Ne National Tourist Area at the end of May 2025.

According to local residents, this is not the first time sand has flooded the road and entered people's houses. Previously, in 2024, on key routes leading to Mui Ne National Tourist Area such as Nguyen Thong, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Huynh Thuc Khang, a series of similar incidents occurred. Notably, in September 2024, 4 consecutive sand spills occurred on Nguyen Thong Street, causing 1 person to be swept away and causing damage to many people's properties. In May 2024, red sand and flood water flooded Huynh Thuc Khang Street, causing about 350m of road to be submerged in mud and sand and damaging 5 people's houses.

The cause of the above situation was determined by the functional sector of Binh Thuan province to be due to the incomplete drainage system on route 706B (Vo Nguyen Giap road). When there is heavy rain, water on route 706B gathers in one area, overflows the hill and then carries red sand down the coastal roads to Mui Ne. Since 2024, Binh Thuan province has requested the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Civil and Industrial Works to quickly deploy construction and complete the drainage system on route 706B, but so far it has not been completely resolved.

According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Binh Thuan province, to overcome the sand overflow problem, the unit has requested the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects of Traffic Works of Binh Thuan province to dredge and clear the ice of Road 706B to increase drainage capacity; at the same time, install stone cages upstream to reduce the amount of water flowing to one side. In addition, the Department of Construction of Binh Thuan province has requested relevant units to inspect the entire drainage system on Road 706B and organize dredging of drainage culverts on the roads leading to Mui Ne National Tourist Area, to release water when there is heavy rain, preventing sand overflow.

Currently, Binh Thuan province is entering the peak of the summer tourist season, the number of visitors coming to visit and travel will be very large. Therefore, to ensure the safety of the people and tourists, local authorities need to soon have a fundamental solution to completely overcome the sand spill situation; at the same time, have a plan to ensure the safety of the people and tourists when heavy rain occurs.
