This is the first time Vietnam's number one chess player, Lai Ly Huynh, has made it to the finals. His opponent is Meng Chen, the 2023 Chinese chess runner-up.

After 8 games in the group stage, both players were leading with 13 points. According to the tournament rules, Lai Ly Huynh and Meng Chen had to enter the final round to compete for the championship.

Lai Ly Huynh and his Chinese opponent gave the fans an exciting game. However, after 4 hours, the two players were tied. The final match had to go into a rapid chess match to determine the winner. Lai Ly Huynh was unfortunately defeated and had to accept the silver medal.

This is also the second time in history that Vietnamese chess has won the silver medal in the men's individual world chess competition. Nguyen Thanh Bao is the first Vietnamese male chess player to win the world chess medal in 2009.

In the men's team event, Lai Ly Huynh ranked second in the men's individual event while Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang ranked 12th, so in total, Vietnam only ranked second and received a silver medal. Last year, Lai Ly Huynh and Nguyen Thanh Bao won the gold medal in the men's team event.

The Singaporean chess team won the men's standard team championship when player Ngo Tong Han ranked 3rd and Liu Uc Hao ranked 8th individually, giving them the number one overall team result. The Malaysian men's chess team ranked 3rd.

In the women's individual results, two players Nguyen Hoang Yen and Le Thi Kim Loan were not in the top 3. The champion was Duong Tu Nam (China), second place was Luu Hoan (China) and third place was Ngo Lan Huong (Singapore).
