Experts from K Hospital and Japan have successfully performed lung cancer surgery using the first Xi generation Davinci Robot system in Vietnam.
The international team of experts discussed and performed endoscopic surgery using the Xi generation Davinci Robot system to treat lung cancer for a 59-year-old male patient being treated at K Hospital. The surgery was monitored and discussed directly by many experts from regional hospitals. After 3 hours, the surgery was successful, and the patient continues to be monitored and treated.
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, Deputy Director of K Hospital said: "Open surgery for lung cancer is a classic method that has been applied in the treatment of lung cancer for a long time. However, this method often leaves a long scar that is unsightly for the patient, the recovery process is therefore longer, and the feeling of pain is more.
Robotic surgery for lung cancer has many advantages. Specifically, the images are clear, the robotic arms are highly flexible, helping to perform meticulous surgery; the surgeon can operate precisely. In addition, it has many outstanding advantages such as ensuring aesthetics, minimal trauma, no bleeding, maximum pain relief, reducing hospital stay while the results of cancer treatment are still guaranteed.
"Typical symptoms that patients need to pay attention to and go to the doctor include: persistent dry cough, weight loss, chest pain; coughing up blood. Especially for high-risk subjects such as people with long-term smoking habits, exposure to cigarette smoke for a long time, people who use a lot of alcohol, stimulants ... then as soon as the initial symptoms appear, they need to pay attention to go to the doctor for timely detection and treatment". We are also very pleased that the first successful lung cancer surgery using the Davinci Xi Robot system was performed at K Hospital, marking a turning point in robotic surgery at the hospital. K Hospital has applied this system to treat and perform surgeries for gastrointestinal cancer, head and neck cancer, gynecology, and urology...
Opens up many opportunities
Dr. Nguyen Khac Kiem, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, shared: "This successful surgery and the exchange and sharing between experts from K Hospital and Japan have opened up many opportunities for applying high technology in cancer treatment, especially robotic endoscopic surgery to treat thoracic diseases in general and lung cancer in particular."
Experts warn that the symptoms of lung cancer are often unclear in the early stages, making it easy for patients to subjectively think that it is a respiratory disease.
"Typical symptoms that patients need to pay attention to when going to the doctor include: persistent dry cough, weight loss, chest pain; coughing up blood. Especially for high-risk subjects such as people with long-term smoking habits, long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, people who use a lot of alcohol, stimulants... as soon as the first symptoms appear, they need to pay attention to go to the doctor for timely detection and treatment," said Dr. Binh.
Currently, only about 30% of lung cancer patients who come to the hospital at an early stage are able to undergo surgery. According to statistics in Vietnam in 2020, the incidence of lung cancer ranked second with 26,262 new cases, accounting for 14.4%, and 23,797 deaths from this disease.
