(CLO) On the afternoon of November 1, at the Center for Women and Development, 20 Thuy Khue, Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in collaboration with the Vietnam Journalists Association organized the launching ceremony of the National Journalism Award on Gender Equality 2024.
This is the first journalism award on gender equality held in Vietnam, marking an important step forward in efforts to promote gender equality through the role of the press and media.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong - Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union said that the 2024 National Journalism Award on Gender Equality was launched in the context of Vietnam actively implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including goal number 5 related to promoting gender equality.

At the same time, this is also one of the activities within the strategic partnership framework of the two Central Committees of the Vietnam Women's Union and UN Women to promote a favorable environment for gender equality, women's empowerment and ending gender-based violence against women and girls in Vietnam. The Press Award was also launched in early November - the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence.
"It can be said that this is an extremely meaningful moment, demonstrating the determination of the Vietnam Women's Union, UN Women and the Vietnam Journalists Association in implementing gender equality, especially contributing to raising awareness of the whole society about the important meaning of gender equality for the progress and development of society and towards recognizing the positive contributions of the media and press in promoting gender equality, empowering women and eliminating violence against women and children. The award is also a forum for journalists and press agencies to share and exchange experiences in promoting gender equality", Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong shared.
Ms. Caroline T. Nyamayemombe - Chief Representative of UN Women Vietnam said that the organization of this Award demonstrates Vietnam's steady progress in achieving gender equality and women's empowerment.
At the launching ceremony, Ms. Caroline T. Nyamayemombe - Head of UN Women Vietnam emphasized the important role of the media in informing and changing the awareness of policy makers as well as people on issues related to women's empowerment and gender equality. "The media is a powerful catalyst for change" , said Ms. Caroline T. Nyamayemombe.
According to the Head of UN Women Vietnam, the Award will focus on three themes to ensure a gender-equal future, leaving no one behind in Vietnam's journey to become a high-income country with zero emissions. The award categories include: Preventing gender-based violence; Promoting equality in digital transformation; Empowering women in economic development.
"I hope this award will inspire a new wave of journalism that is creative, empathetic, and gives voice to women, while also promoting discussions on gender equality. Let's work together to create a media environment that promotes women's empowerment and gender equality in Vietnam. Through each story and on each platform, I hope that gender equality will become a reality, not just an aspiration," said Ms. Caroline T. Nyamayemombe.

According to the Organizing Committee, the National Press Award on Gender Equality will select press works of all types that have been published and broadcast on press forms (print, electronic, radio, television) licensed by competent State agencies from January 1, 2022 to November 30, 2024, with content that meets the criteria of the Award. Press works participating in the Award must have content and form that does not violate the Press Law and other provisions of law.
Works that have participated and received awards at other Press Awards will not be eligible to participate in the National Press Award on Gender Equality. Each individual, organization, and press agency may submit no more than 03 works to participate in the Award.
Awards for works of authors/author groups in 04 categories (printed newspaper, electronic newspaper, radio, television) with the award structure for each category including 01 A Prize, 01 B Prize, 02 C Prizes, 02 Encouragement Prizes. Regarding collective awards: The Organizing Committee will award 02 Collective Awards to agencies and units that propose and submit the most entries: including Certificates and prize money.
