Spread the message of love from World Breastfeeding Week

Breastfeeding not only brings great benefits to the health of children and mothers, but also contributes to protecting the environment and minimizing the negative impacts of climate change.

From August 1-7, World Breastfeeding Week will be held with the theme "Prioritizing breastfeeding: Building a sustainable support system."

On July 10, the Department of Mothers and Children ( Ministry of Health ) has just sent a document to the Department of Health of provinces, cities and hospitals with obstetrics and pediatrics departments, requesting the implementation of many practical activities to encourage and support breastfeeding.

According to the Department of Maternal and Child Health, breastfeeding not only brings immense benefits to the health of both children and mothers, but also contributes to environmental protection and mitigates the negative impacts of climate change. In this context, building a sustainable support system for breastfeeding mothers is an urgent requirement.

The Ministry of Health requests that localities strengthen the implementation of the National Target Program and the Nutrition Care Program for the first 1,000 days of life, aiming to ensure support for breastfeeding for all mothers, with particular priority given to women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Depending on the actual conditions, localities should direct health facilities in their areas to implement activities to promote breastfeeding in an appropriate and effective manner.

The Ministry of Health requires all maternity and pediatric hospitals and medical facilities with maternity, pediatric, or combined maternity and pediatric departments to strictly comply with Government Decree No. 100/2014/ND-CP on the management of the business and use of breast milk substitutes, feeding bottles, and artificial nipples. At the same time, the contents of the Decree must be disseminated and thoroughly explained to all medical staff.

Provincial and city Centers for Disease Control (CDC) need to coordinate with relevant units to implement extensive communication activities at all levels, sectors, and among the public. The communication content should focus on the importance of breastfeeding infants within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding until 24 months of age.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that breastfeeding is not only a right for every child, but also a solution that contributes to sustainable development, saves resources, and reduces the burden of healthcare costs for families and society. Breastfeeding also helps reduce emissions from substitute products, while enhancing the community's resilience to environmental and climate impacts.
