For this year's Lunar New Year flower season, Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower village (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) has planted nearly 190,000 baskets of various flowers to serve the Tet market. This is a traditional flower village with a history of 100 years.

Every Lunar New Year, this flower village supplies hundreds of thousands of ornamental flower baskets to the market, providing a stable and sustainable source of income for many households over the years.

These days, people are busy tending to their "spiritual children," hoping the flowers will bloom in time for the arrival of spring.

From the sixth lunar month, the locals begin planting flowers to supply the market for the Lunar New Year, aiming for sales by the twelfth lunar month. The flowers are now ready to be brought to market.

To meet customer demand, flower gardens are constantly updating and experimenting with new flower varieties, aiming to continuously diversify the range and attract buyers. The main types of flowers grown include marigolds, chrysanthemums, petunias, and evening primroses…

To cultivate beautiful chrysanthemum fields that bloom just in time for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), growers must be meticulous in every step, from seedling cultivation, watering, fertilizing, staking, and pruning to disease prevention. They must also constantly monitor the weather to apply appropriate techniques to ensure the plants thrive and bloom at the right time.

According to some flower growers, this year's unfavorable weather has caused significant damage to the flowers. Ms. Kieu, a local flower grower, said that this year she planted more than 1,000 pots of flowers, including purple chrysanthemums and large-flowered chrysanthemums. The selling price ranges from 200,000 VND/pair to 900,000 VND/pair, depending on the size.

According to the Department of Economy and Infrastructure of Binh Thuy District (Can Tho City), this year the area of ​​Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower village is estimated at about 18 hectares, with more than 30 households growing flowers, producing approximately 188,600 baskets.

In terms of varieties, farmers focus on developing their strengths, such as various types of chrysanthemums. In addition, there are now some new varieties such as Pico and multi-colored Korean chrysanthemums. The size of the pots, the number of plants, the flower colors, and the application of lighting techniques also contribute to the diversity and richness of flower styles.

Since the beginning of the season, the impact of erratic weather and unexpected rains has caused crops to be affected by pests and diseases, waterlogging, yellowing leaves, and premature or delayed blooming, resulting in losses of about 5-7%. However, farmers have promptly applied remedial solutions and used new technical advancements to minimize damage.
