The authorities of communes and wards have been urgently evacuating people to safe places, minimizing damage caused by landslides, and urgently clearing the first step of important traffic routes.

At 9:30 a.m. on October 7, at km 189, National Highway 70, Nam Chu village, Phong Hai commune, Lao Cai province, a serious landslide occurred, causing complete traffic congestion.

The landslide also damaged and buried 3 houses; fortunately, there were no casualties. Mr. Bui Quang Hung, Secretary of Phong Hai Commune Party Committee, said that the landslide area is in a high-risk area; therefore, in recent days, to ensure the safety of the people, the local Party Committee and authorities have propagated and mobilized people to move to a safe place.

“We are urgently arranging temporary accommodation for 3 households who lost their homes; at the same time, we will soon survey and arrange resettlement land for the households. Currently, the commune is coordinating with the authorities, organizing 24/7 duty, putting up warning signs, leveling the landslide mass to soon clear National Highway 70,” Mr. Hung added.

As soon as the landslide information was received, the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Construction directed the regular maintenance unit to mobilize machinery and equipment to concentrate on clearing the landslide volume (about 10,000 m3); urgently clearing and opening the route as soon as possible. It is expected that by about 5:00 p.m. this afternoon, this National Highway will be temporarily opened.

Currently, in Lao Cai province, the risk of landslides is very high due to heavy rains in the past few days, causing the soil to be saturated and weak. In Y Ty commune, there are 13 landslide points and high risk of landslides. The People's Committee of Y Ty commune has mobilized forces to each village and hamlet to check landslide points and high risk of landslides; propagate and mobilize people to proactively take preventive measures and be ready to evacuate from dangerous areas.

In particular, the rapid response teams in the villages were assigned to carefully check the tents and shacks along streams, hillsides, and areas at risk of landslides. Thereby, the authorities mobilized people to move out of 161 tents and shacks to return home or to safe shelters.

Muong Bo commune has established many working groups including police, military , disaster prevention and control teams, along with specialized departments, agencies, and mass organizations to directly propagate and mobilize households living in dangerous areas to move to safety.

As of the morning of October 7, 33 households with 145 people had been supported by the commune's forces to evacuate to safe places such as relatives' houses, cultural houses, schools, medical stations... The evacuation was carried out urgently, ensuring absolute safety, and receiving high consensus from the people.

Along with that, at key, high-risk locations, Muong Bo commune has put up danger warning signs, assigned forces to be on duty 24/7, closely monitored weather developments and is ready to support people in case of emergency.
