Laotian Times reported that authorities in Bolikhamxay province (Central Laos) recently conducted a search and discovered a large quantity of drugs hidden in a house in Thaphabath district, seizing 2,003 packages containing more than 4 million amphetamine pills, with a total weight of up to 447 kg.
However, the drug dealers escaped from the scene. Police have now set up a special task force to arrest them.
According to Bolikhamxay provincial police, the entire amount of drugs was ready to be transported to a neighboring country. Authorities have not confirmed which country because the investigation is still ongoing.
Last week, authorities in Bokeo province, northern Laos, arrested three people residing in Tonpheng district who were transporting 400 kg of heroin hidden in a car.
Meanwhile, in Cambodia, the Cambodia Daily reported that since the beginning of 2023, the country's authorities have busted more than 2,000 cases of drug trafficking and use.
Figures from the Cambodian government 's anti-drug campaign report issued on April 20 stated that within more than 100 days from January 1 to April 20, 2023, Cambodia had cracked down on 2,139 cases of drug trafficking and use, arresting 5,110 subjects, including 336 women.
The report on Cambodia’s anti-drug campaign comes amid a surge in drug trafficking in the Southeast Asian country, with drug trafficking occurring not only in entertainment venues, karaoke bars and nightclubs, but also in prisons.
According to a report in late December 2022 by the Cambodian Ministry of Interior , of the nearly 40,000 prisoners in prisons nationwide, up to 50% of prisoners are drug offenders.
In 2022, the authorities of the land of pagodas cracked down on nearly 6,300 drug cases nationwide, arrested nearly 15,000 subjects and seized nearly 15 tons of various drugs.
