Hanoi: A 45-year-old woman had her thumb severed. Doctors at Hanoi Medical University Hospital successfully reattached her second toe.
On May 15, Dr. Hoang Hong, Department of Plastic Surgery, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said that the patient had a work accident 7 months ago that turned his life upside down.
The patient lost her left thumb, and the nerve that controls this finger was also damaged. "The accident left the woman unable to hold things or even tie her own hair because her left thumb accounts for 50% of the hand's function," the doctor said. In addition, the finger always feels sore, making the patient uncomfortable.
After consultation, the microsurgery team transferred the second toe of the left foot onto the hand, recreating the patient's left thumb. According to the doctor, the size of the left toe is similar to the remaining thumb, ensuring the function of the foot for the toe, without damage.
After surgery, the patient's mobility increased, his fingers recovered well, and he could bend, stretch, and grasp objects.

Doctors said that toe transfer surgery to create finger shape is a challenge for surgeons, requiring experience and deep expertise. In addition to the goal of restoring function and sensation, doctors must consider aesthetics to make the graft compatible with the other fingers, similar to the remaining thumb, and limit post-transplant sequelae.
After one month, the patient can grasp and do activities with the new thumb, and continue to practice rehabilitation to improve mobility.
Currently, the patient can move and hold his hand normally. Video : Provided by the doctor
