In recent times, Vietnam's urban system has been growing in both quantity and scale, making an important contribution to the country's socio-economic development. In the context of international integration, Vietnam has been proactive in building sustainable smart city development orientations, building green cities, responding to climate change, applying IT to modernize the country, reforming administration towards digital government, and participating in the fourth industrial revolution.

At the workshop, Director of the Academy of Construction and Urban Management - Dr. Tran Huu Ha informed: Developing sustainable smart cities is one of the important driving forces to realize the goal of turning our country into a modern industrialized country. The project "Developing sustainable smart cities in Vietnam for the period 2018 - 2025 and orientation to 2030" (Project 950) has been approved by the Prime Minister to promote the development of smart cities. Resolution 06-NQ/TW dated January 24, 2022 of the Politburo on planning, construction, management and sustainable development of Vietnamese urban areas to 2030, with a vision to 2045 emphasized the goal: It is necessary to develop modern, green, smart urban architecture, rich in identity, with typical cultural elements preserved and promoted.

“The purpose of developing smart city criteria is to set standards to monitor, measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the process of building and developing smart city, thereby providing specific directions and goals to aim for,” said Dr. Tran Huu Ha.

Accordingly, the Draft Set of Sustainable Smart City Criteria - Version 1.0 is built on 3 pillars of sustainable smart city development in Vietnam, including Smart City Planning, Smart City Construction and Management and Smart City Utilities on the basis of the urban spatial database system. In which, the Criteria Set includes 66 criteria divided into 17 groups of assessment criteria/4 maturity levels.

The set of criteria for sustainable urban development - Version 1.0 will serve the work of directing, building programs, plans, and solutions for developing urban development; monitoring and evaluating the level of urban development according to the level and the subjects of application of the set of criteria are the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities, cities and towns; organizations, the General Association of Construction, associations and professional associations.

At the workshop, representatives of relevant ministries, urban authorities, construction departments, and experts discussed the criteria of the draft Sustainable Smart City Criteria Set; listened to the presentation on Vietnam - Korea Cooperation on Smart City: Technical Support Project "Vietnam - Korea Cooperation Center on Smart City and Construction Technology".
