On August 18, at Van Tuong Martyrs Cemetery (Binh Hai Commune, Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province), the Veterans Liaison Committee of Regiment 1, Division 2, Military Region 5 held a memorial service to commemorate the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Van Tuong Victory 59 years ago.
The ceremony was chaired by Major General Nguyen Trong Huy, former Deputy Commander of Military Region 5, Head of the Liaison Committee of Regiment 1. Attending were Colonel, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Nguyen Duc Chuyen; Colonel Trinh Cong Son, Deputy Political Commissar of the Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command; along with a large number of cadres, people of Binh Hai commune and comrades of the martyrs who participated in the battle to create the historic Van Tuong Victory on August 18, 1965.
At the memorial service, delegates recalled the heroic sacrifices of the soldiers of the past. Fifty-nine years ago, on the night of August 17, 1965, more than a dozen warships of the US 7th Fleet anchored in an arc offshore and continuously fired cannons at Van Tuong village and high points.
On the morning of August 18, 1965, a large American force consisting of 4 battalions of Marines, 1 battalion of tanks and armored vehicles, 2 battalions of 105mm artillery, 6 landing ships and gunboats, and hundreds of fighter planes, launched a coordinated naval, land, and air operation into Van Tuong. After using artillery and aircraft to bombard and clear the way, the American troops immediately divided into 4 groups to advance toward Van Tuong.
Faced with that situation, Regiment 1 calmly coordinated closely with the militia and guerrillas to fight back the enemy. The battle lasted until the evening of August 18, 1965, causing about 900 American soldiers to be eliminated from the battle, 22 tanks and armored vehicles, and 13 planes to be shot down.
With its achievements and feats, Regiment 1 was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State three times. Over the years, Veterans of Regiment 1 have always done a good job of educating traditions and helping each other in life.
