(NADS) - People drink alcohol and dance with wooden dragon heads during the Drunken Dragon Festival to commemorate the benevolent deeds of a Zen master who saved sentient beings.
This is a unique traditional folk festival celebrated by fishermen in Macau. Traditionally, on the evening of the seventh day of the fourth lunar month, Macau fishermen gather at the market, where they sit around tables to eat, gradually developing into the custom of holding a "longevity" feast.
According to the legends of the people of Macau (China), in the early years of the Qing Dynasty, the country suffered a terrible drought and famine. Fortunately, thanks to the help of a Zen master and a dragon, the people escaped the disaster. To commemorate the kindness of the Zen master and the dragon, every year on the Zen master's birthday, the people of Macau hold the "Drunken Dragon Festival".
During the festival, they use wood to make dragon heads and tails for performances. Festival participants hold alcohol in their mouths and spit it out to create a mist over the dragon's head, intentionally trying to intoxicate it. However, by the end of the ceremony, most people are found to be drunk.
