The Swedish defender scored his first goal in nearly three years with a close-range finish in the second half to help United climb to sixth place.
Heading into this game, coach Erik ten Hag is in dire need of answers as United slumped to a ninth defeat in 17 games this season, with a 4-3 Champions League loss to FC Copenhagen in midweek. United have suffered five defeats in their previous 10 home games this season, leading to their worst start at Old Trafford since the 1930-31 campaign.

The Old Trafford side are facing an early exit from the Champions League, but have now won four of their last five Premier League games, all by just one goal.
MU's performance and the way they beat Luton - who were returning to Old Trafford for the first time since 1991 - failed to convince viewers.
New signing Rasmus Hojlund scored twice on his return to Denmark in midweek to take his tally to five goals in four Champions League games. However, Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League.
In the match against Luton, the Red Devils' £64 million signing missed two great chances to end his goal drought in the English top flight. Hojlund's best play was to create a chance for Alejandro Garnacho but the young Argentine talent could not beat goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski (Luton) in a delicious situation.
Pressure temporarily eases on coach Ten Hag
Ten Hag's side had to wait until the 59th minute to break the deadlock. Marcus Rashford's low cross was deflected and became a pass for Lindelof to finish from 10 meters away.
Rashford was among those who wasted a chance to double United's lead later on, but the hosts were rarely troubled defensively against a weak Luton side and kept their first Premier League clean sheet at Old Trafford this season.
This victory helps MU to stay 6 points behind the leader Man City but has played 1 more game. Meanwhile, Luton is still above the relegation zone thanks to a better goal difference.
Elsewhere, Wolves' late impressive performance denied visitors Tottenham the chance to return to the top of the table, with the hosts scoring twice in stoppage time to seal a dramatic 2-1 win at Molineux.
Tottenham suffered their second consecutive defeat
Brennan Johnson's first goal for Tottenham since his move from Nottingham Forest put Ange Postecoglou's side ahead in the third minute. But Wolves dominated from there and secured a memorable win with goals from Pablo Sarabia (90+1) and Mario Lemina (90+7).
After starting the season with a 10-game unbeaten streak, this was Tottenham's second consecutive defeat following a 4-1 loss to Chelsea in the last round. The defeat to Wolves left Spurs in third place, one point behind Man City.
Meanwhile, Arsenal took advantage of Tottenham's stumble by beating visitors Burnley 3-1 to move a point above their north London rivals and into second place. Everton moved out of the relegation zone with a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace.
