Information before the match Man City vs Bayern Munich
The reigning champions of England and Germany meet at the Etihad (Manchester, England), as Man City host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Despite doing well in European competition, both sides have struggled to defend their respective domestic titles this season.
Man City beat Southampton 4-1 at the weekend to keep Arsenal at bay in the Premier League title race. It was their eighth straight win, a run that looks set to be particularly tense for Man City at the end of the season.
With Erling Haaland starting and back to full fitness, it was no surprise that two more goals at St. Mary's took the Norwegian's tally to 30 for the season.
The club's top scorer has added 10 goals in just six Champions League appearances this season, but Haaland has never had much success against Bayern, losing all seven times during his time at Borussia Dortmund.
Haaland has been instrumental in their progress to this stage, scoring five goals in a 7-0 thrashing of another German side, RB Leipzig, to seal an 8-1 aggregate victory in the last 16.
Man City regularly met Bayern in the early years of the Champions League, winning two of three meetings at the Etihad, with their only home defeat coming away to the German giants.
Despite being top of the Bundesliga, Bayern have been even less convincing than Man City in the domestic league and Thomas Tuchel's poor start to life as Bayern boss has increased the pressure on this match.
Former coach Julian Nagelsmann had previously comfortably taken charge of a very difficult group containing Barcelona and Inter Milan, before they swept aside Paris Saint-Germain without much fanfare in the last 16.
Tuchel's first game in charge saw Bayern comfortably beat title rivals Dortmund at the Allianz Arena, but they followed that up with a shock defeat to Freiburg, crashing out of the DFB-Pokal at the quarter-final stage.
But they bounced back at the weekend, beating their rivals to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
One of Tuchel's main tasks will be to tighten up Bayern's defence, as they have kept just six clean sheets in their last 16 games, conceding two or more goals in each.
That is a concern as they prepare to face arguably the best attacking side in Europe, who are in prolific scoring form with a prolific striker at the top of the pitch.
However, Tuchel has shown form in this tournament, reaching both the 2020 and 2021 Champions League finals.
The 2021 final saw him defeat Guardiola's side against Chelsea, just weeks after knocking them out in the FA Cup semi-finals.
Man City vs Bayern Munich squad information
Guardiola will be able to call upon a near-fit Man City squad for this clash, with Phil Foden the only absentee as he recovers from an appendectomy.
The Man City manager has not tinkered with his line-up much in recent weeks meaning there will be no major changes to the team that beat Southampton.
Bernardo Silva could replace Riyad Mahrez after the Portuguese midfielder played the full 90 minutes in both legs against Leipzig in the previous round.
The right-back trio remained unchanged, meaning there was no room for Aymeric Laporte, while John Stones continued to excel in the midfield role, preferred to Kalvin Phillips.
Tuchel will take his Bayern side to Manchester without a fit centre-forward, as Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting will miss out due to a knee problem.
Serge Gnabry was used centrally in the win over Freiburg, but Thomas Muller has also played there before.
With Leon Goretzka expected to return after being rested against Freiburg, Jamal Musiala could move further forward with Muller used up front.
Sadio Mane's struggles could see him replaced on the left flank by Kingsley Coman, who scored the crucial winner away from home in Paris in the first leg of the last-16 tie.
