Vietnam U23 became the only team to reach the semi-finals with a perfect record. After easily defeating Laos U23 3-0 in the opening match, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team continued to bring joy to fans with a 2-1 victory over Cambodia U23.
Although the performance still has some scratches, the achievements created by Khuat Van Khang and his teammates still deserve praise from the home fans. At least, the fiery fighting spirit of the Golden Star Warriors has become a bright spot that helps the whole team confidently overcome the U23 Philippines to proudly advance to the final.
The opponent is certainly not easy to play against. Compared to previous participations, the Philippine youth football team has really transformed. The disciplined, calculating style based on the annoying defensive counter-attacking style has helped the team under coach Garrath McPherson create a surprise in the deadly group A.
Among them, the 2-0 victory over U23 Malaysia in the opening match was the most outstanding. Those 3 points also became the premise for U23 Philippines to book a ticket to the round of 4 strongest teams as the second-placed team with the best record.
But in all aspects, U23 Philippines is still underestimated. After all, the students under the direction of Coach McPherson still do not have much experience in fighting and competing in major tournaments. On the contrary, that factor is the strength of U23 Vietnam.
Khuat Van Khang, Quoc Viet, Van Truong, Trung Kien, Thai Son... are familiar faces in Vietnamese youth teams participating in regional tournaments. In addition, the harsh environment in V.League also helps the current U23 Vietnam team have enough experience and courage to overcome difficulties.
Seeing coach Kim Sang-sik and his team win tickets to the semi-finals, the number of Vietnamese fans in the stands at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium is expected to be significantly larger than in the group stage. However, if they cannot come directly to the stadium to "support the fire", football fans can still cheer through live broadcasts of VTV or FTP Play.
