Going into this match, coach Lionel Scaloni arranged Messi to play in the starting lineup. Meanwhile, many bright faces on the attack line such as Lautaro Martinez or Julian Alvarez were on the bench.
Despite not having the strongest squad, Argentina still easily overwhelmed Puerto Rico. It only took them 14 minutes to score. After Messi hit the crossbar, the ball bounced to Nicolas Gonzalez. This player volleyed and Mac Allister headed the ball into the Puerto Rico net.
In the 21st minute, Messi showed his class with an assist that tore through Puerto Rico's defense for Gonzalo Montiel to volley into the net, raising the score to 2-0 for Argentina.
