Liverpool successfully recruited a 150 million euro contract, breaking a series of records

(Dan Tri) - Liverpool have agreed to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for 150 million euros including add-ons. This is a historic deal for the Bundesliga, Premier League and Liverpool.

The current Premier League transfer record belongs to Chelsea with more than 127 million euros spent on the purchase of central midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton in the summer of 2023.

Liverpool also spent a record amount of more than 93 million euros to get the signature of Darwin Nunez from Benfica in 2022. In the Bundesliga, the most expensive player sale belongs to the contract of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid for 96 million euros.

However, these figures have been broken when Liverpool reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to recruit attacking star Florian Wirtz, with a total fee of 150 million euros. Currently, the midfielder born in 2003 is waiting to board a plane to Merseyside for a medical before signing the contract.

According to The Athletic, the young German talent has long wanted to join Liverpool despite interest from Man City and Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old's performance at Leverkusen has been considered spectacular when he won the Bundesliga Player of the Year award and helped his team win the 2023-24 season with an unbeaten record.

Since moving to Leverkusen in 2020, Wirtz has scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 games for the German club. His peak was 18 goals in 49 games in the 2023-2024 season.

Wirtz is seen as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool's squad. The German midfielder is expected to add creativity in midfield and is "the ideal piece of the puzzle for a new tactical system" under manager Arne Slot, after winning the Premier League in 2024-2025.

If all goes well, Wirtz will officially debut for Liverpool in early July, before embarking on the summer tour. This is considered the first blockbuster contract of the 2025 summer transfer window, demonstrating the ambition of Liverpool as well as coach Slot to not only stop at the domestic championship.

After completing the signing of Florian Wirtz, Liverpool will look to sign left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, who is set to join the Premier League champions for a reported €53m.
