The signing of Ekitike demonstrates Liverpool's ambition to build a long-term competitive squad. |
According to the Liverpool Echo , Liverpool and Hugo Ekitike have agreed a six-year contract. The Frenchman only wants to join Liverpool, despite interest from other clubs such as Newcastle United and Manchester United.
The move comes as Liverpool look to add a new striker to their attack, with Darwin Núñez, a regular on the bench last season, almost certain to leave the club.
Liverpool turned to Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak as a replacement, but were flatly rejected when the Magpies announced they would not sell their star player. Ekitike, 23, has a similar playing style and appearance to Isak.
Both possess a fast playing style, sharp finishing ability and explosiveness when running in behind the opposition defence. With these qualities, he is considered the perfect addition to Arne Slot's attack at Liverpool.
Newcastle United were also in the race for Ekitike. However, they withdrew from the race after Ekitike made it clear that he only wanted to join Liverpool. This decision paved the way for "The Kop" to move closer to completing the deal.
Negotiations are currently underway between Liverpool and Eintracht Frankfurt to agree a transfer fee. The German club value Ekitike at around €75m (£63m).
