Revealing MU's opponent in the League Cup

Manchester United will have to participate in the Carabao Cup from the second round for the first time in 11 years, due to not winning a place in the European Cup.

Manchester United failed to qualify for European competition for the first time since 2014/15.

According to the draw results that took place in the early morning of August 14, coach Ruben Amorim's team will face Grimsby Town, a team playing in League Two (England's fourth tier), in the match taking place on August 26.

According to Carabao Cup rules, Premier League teams not participating in European competition must start the tournament in the second round, and Manchester United are no exception. This is also the first time since the 2014/15 season that Manchester United have had to participate in the League Cup in the second round.

The draw sees Manchester United face a challenging trip to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town, who beat Shrewsbury Town 3-1 to reach the second round.

Despite being rated as superior, Manchester United cannot be complacent against Grimsby Town, especially when recent history shows that they often have difficulties against lower-ranked teams. In the 2023/24 season, Manchester United faced Newport County, another League Two team, in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Despite leading 2-0 after just 13 minutes thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United were suddenly levelled at 2-2 through goals from Bryn Morris and Will Evans. It took a 68th-minute goal from Antony and a 94th-minute strike from Rasmus Hojlund to secure their place in the next round. That match was a warning that no game is ever easy, especially in cup competitions.
