Lo Lo Chai village is located at the foot of Lung Cu flagpole - the northernmost point of the country. The whole village has more than 120 households, mainly Lo Lo people, of which 56 households participate in the community tourism model.
Lung Cu Flagpole - The sacred symbol of the Fatherland, stands tall on the top of Dragon Mountain. This is also the location from which you can see the whole view of Lo Lo Chai village.
The houses in Lo Lo Chai are all made of rammed earth, ranging in age from a few decades to over 200 years. Since 2011, the village has started tourism, of the 37 ancient houses, 28 are used as homestays.
On October 17, 2025, in Huzhou city, Zhejiang province (China), Lo Lo Chai officially appeared in the list of the most typical tourist villages in the world , announced by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).
This is the first time a community destination in Tuyen Quang has received this title. This shows that the tourism development model here has met international standards in governance, environment and contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The “World’s Best Tourism Village 2025” award was presented by UN Tourism based on criteria of governance, innovation, sustainability, environment and contribution to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Lo Lo Chai surpassed more than 270 applications from 65 countries to become one of the most typical community tourism villages in the world.
In Lo Lo Chai, people are trained in welcoming guests, food safety, tourism etiquette and fire prevention skills. Women take on the role of hosts, cooking traditional dishes; young men lead guests through agriculture, handicrafts and culture.
Community life remains cohesive and does not fall into a state of "disintegration" like in many other tourist destinations.
The development of Lo Lo Chai received technical support from Helvetas (Switzerland) through the project “Sustainable Tourism for Development” (ST4SD), in which experts provided advice, training and support in completing the international nomination dossier. Without this systematic support, a highland village would hardly meet the United Nations’ strict criteria on governance, livelihood, environment, culture and integration.
Coming to Lo Lo Chai, visitors will be immersed in the peaceful space, blending into the life of the Lo Lo ethnic people. They can participate in activities such as weaving linen, growing corn, making traditional wine, enjoying specialties such as thang co, smoked buffalo meat, bamboo rice, corn wine. In addition, visitors can also visit Lung Cu flagpole, the northernmost point of the country and admire the majestic natural scenery of the rocky plateau.
Lo Lo Chai is not only an attractive tourist destination but also a model of sustainable community tourism, contributing to cultural preservation, economic development and improving people's lives. The title "World's Best Tourist Village 2025" is a worthy recognition of the efforts of the Lo Lo community in developing sustainable tourism, preserving cultural identity and protecting the environment.
