Tiny wild lemons are making waves, traders are telling each other to collect them quickly or they won't be able to sell them in time.

Having just finished packing a box of Mau Son forest lemons to send to a customer, Ms. Tin ( Lang Son ) said that today she only collected more than ten kilos of lemons. Because it is the beginning of the season, the amount of lemons harvested is very small, so she does not have enough to pay for the customer's order.

Having sold Mau Son wild lemons for more than 4 years, she said that every season, customers contact her to order a lot. At the beginning of the season, the quantity of lemons is small and the selling price is also high. However, customers still order a lot. "Because many people believe that early season lemons have a lot of essential oils, so soaking them in honey to treat coughs will be better," she shared.

In the middle of the season, the amount of lemons harvested is very large. In years when the lemon harvest is good, every day she collects several hundred kilograms of fruit from the people and sells them all. Last year alone, she sold a ton of wild lemons.

Mau Son wild lemon has begun to enter harvest season.

This year, she said, Mau Son forest lemons had a bad harvest, and the quantity of lemons was not as much as last year. She did not know whether the price would be higher than previous years. At the moment, she is selling to wholesale customers at a price ranging from 55,000 to 60,000 VND/kg.

According to her, people now bring the seeds of Mau Son wild lemons back to grow near their homes for easy care and harvesting. Lemons picked from the forest are still available on the market, but in very small quantities.

She said that lemons picked from wild and cultivated trees are of equal quality. The difference between the two is that lemons picked from wild trees are smaller and uneven. Meanwhile, lemons picked from cultivated trees are larger, more even, and more beautiful.

Bringing Mau Son wild lemon varieties to Hanoi to plant, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son (residing in Long Bien, Hanoi) said that this lemon variety is very easy to grow and does not require much care. However, they grow very slowly, unlike other types of lemons.

Currently, he is growing about ten Mau Son wild lemon trees in his garden. He has been growing them for 4 years now, and the trees have started to bear fruit, but the canopy is very small and the amount of fruit he gets is quite small. From each tree, he only gets about 1-2kg of fruit.

Currently, there are not many early season lemons, so customers may have to wait.

The amount of fruit harvested is only enough for his family, so he does not sell it. Occasionally, he collects wild lemons from Mau Son to sell to customers. Currently, he is also grafting wild lemons onto grapefruit trees with the hope of harvesting more fruit in the future.

He added that the wild lemon is only as small as a kumquat, or even smaller. The wild lemon has a mild sour taste. “I think what makes wild lemon special is its essential oil content. If you use wild lemon to soak in honey or make salted lemon, almost no other lemon can surpass it,” he said.

Knowing about Mau Son wild lemon trees more than ten years ago during an agricultural fair, in recent years he has had the opportunity to bring this lemon variety to his garden.

The Mau Son wild lemon tree was brought back by Mr. Thanh Son to plant 4 years ago.

When he brought it home to plant in his garden, he did not expect the tree to flower and bear fruit in Hanoi. But in fact, it is one of the trees that has grown beyond his expectations, with flowers and fruits on the branches, and the quality of the fruit is stable every year.

Although this is a native plant species in our country, he said it is very difficult to find seedlings online. Therefore, to bring seedlings home to plant in his garden, he had to go all the way to Mau Son (Lang Son).
