Nghi Thuan Commune, Nghi Loc District is the largest onion growing area in Nghe An Province. Currently, onion is in harvest season but the price is decreasing day by day, making farmers very sad.
Nghi Thuan Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An Province has more than 80 hectares of chives. The chive growing profession in Nghi Thuan Commune has existed for many years. The soil and climate conditions are suitable, so the chives grown in Nghi Thuan Commune fields produce large bulbs and a unique aroma that cannot be found anywhere else.

Shallots can be harvested after about 6 months of planting. Shallots are grown for a long time, so people in Nghi Thuan commune often intercrop with other vegetables and crops to increase their income.
Shallots are currently in their main harvest season. People in Nghi Thuan commune are focusing on harvesting shallots to sell to traders. At the beginning of the harvest, everyone is excited because the price of shallots is high, ranging from 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, depending on the quality of the shallots.
At the beginning of the season, the price of shallots was at 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. During the main season, the price of shallots is decreasing every day. Photo: NT
Currently, the price of shallots in Nghi Thuan commune has dropped to 28,000 VND/kg. Photo: NT
However, the closer it gets to the main season, the lower the price of shallots becomes. In fact, the price of shallots "falls" every day. "My family grows more than 4 sao of shallots. This year, the shallots are big and beautiful. At the beginning of the season, the price of shallots was quite high, so everyone was happy. But after harvesting only a small part of the area, the price dropped again, now it is only about 28,000 VND/kg", said Ms. Hoang Thi Nham (born in 1971, residing in Khanh Thien hamlet, Nghi Thuan commune).
The price is low so only Mrs. Nham goes to the field to harvest shallots. Mrs. Nham harvests and processes the shallots completely by hand, which is quite time-consuming. Therefore, each day, Mrs. Nham can only harvest about 20 - 30kg of shallots.

The price of shallots has dropped, income has decreased, making people very sad. Ms. Trinh Thi Thu (born in 1974, residing in Khanh Thien hamlet, Nghi Thuan commune) said: "At this time last year, the price of shallots was at 40,000 VND/kg. This year, since Tet, the price of shallots has gradually decreased. There were times when the price decreased by the day, and our people also lost a lot of money."
Mrs. Thu's family has about 2 sao of shallots. After more than 6 months of planting and caring for them, when it was time to harvest, the price of shallots dropped again, making Mrs. Thu very disappointed. The reason for the low price of shallots is that at this time, people have started to harvest en masse, so the supply has increased. Meanwhile, shallots are mainly consumed through local traders. After purchasing and processing, shallots are sold to retailers in markets in Nghe An province and neighboring areas.

Shallots depend heavily on traders so are greatly affected by NT.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture of Nghi Loc district, there are nearly 300 hectares of chives grown in the area, with a yield of 5 tons/ha. Of which, chives are grown most concentratedly in Nghi Thuan commune.
Nghi Thuan Commune Farmers' Association also mobilized and built a cooperative model for producing shallots according to VietGAP standards. Up to now, the shallot products of Nghi Thuan Commune shallot cooperative have been certified to meet VietGAP standards, a 3-star OCOP product.
The consumption of chives depends largely on traders and market fluctuations. Chives are also a seasonal crop. Therefore, when harvested in large quantities, the output often leads to a decrease in price.
