Lemon has a low glycemic index, does not increase blood sugar levels much, can improve insulin resistance, and helps stabilize blood sugar.

Research by the University of Paris-Saclay (France) published in the European Journal of Nutrition shows that lemon juice slows down the conversion of starch in foods (bread, white pasta) into glucose (sugar), thereby preventing blood sugar spikes. People who drink lemon juice have 30% lower blood sugar after eating two slices of bread than those who do not drink lemon juice. Lemon juice also slows down the increase in blood sugar for 35 minutes.

Researchers at the University of Catania (Italy) believe that polyphenol compounds in lemons can increase insulin sensitivity. This plant-derived compound has antioxidant properties, fighting free radicals that damage cells, including glucose-producing cells in the liver that respond to insulin.

According to the American Diabetes Association, lemons are beneficial for people with diabetes because this fruit is rich in soluble fiber, which slows down digestion. Thanks to that, this fruit helps control blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Lemons are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help lower fasting blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Vitamin C is also involved in collagen production and can help maintain artery integrity, reducing the risk of diabetes complications such as heart disease and kidney disease.

Lemons and other citrus fruits are high in fiber and have a low glycemic index (GI), meaning they are less likely to raise blood sugar levels. They can improve insulin resistance, helping to stabilize blood sugar.

Because of the above benefits, diabetics should add lemon to their diet. However, it is necessary to consult a doctor about foods or diet for the purpose of controlling diabetes.

People with sensitive teeth should drink diluted lemon juice through a straw and rinse their mouth afterward.

Lemon peel contains a large amount of a plant compound called oxalate. Consuming large amounts of oxalate can increase the risk of kidney stones. It can also act as a diuretic, which can cause dehydration if consumed in large amounts. If you drink lemon water regularly, you should drink plenty of water.
