Pink eye disease spreads rapidly, forcing many students to stay home from school

Class 5C, Tinh Hiep Primary School, Son Tinh District ( Quang Ngai ) has a total of 35 students, but 19 students were absent due to pink eye. Class 5C homeroom teacher Phan Thi Hue said that pink eye spreads very quickly. A few days ago, the class had 3 students absent, but after 3 days, 19 students were absent.
Tinh Hiep Primary School has 622 students in 24 classes. According to statistics, in the past 2 weeks, 132 students have had pink eye. To date, 43 students have recovered and returned to school. The remaining 89 students are still at home, isolated from their classmates as required by the school.
“Pink eye disease has appeared in almost all classes of the school. The rate of students infected with the disease is up to 20%. The school has notified all parents to closely monitor their children's health. In case of symptoms of pink eye, they must stay home from school until they are completely recovered, to avoid spreading the disease in the school. After students return to school, the school has directed teachers to plan make-up lessons to ensure the teaching and learning program,” said Mr. Le Van Tri, Principal of Tinh Hiep Primary School.

Propagating prevention of pink eye disease for students through leaflets

According to the Director of the Son Tinh District Medical Center, since the beginning of September, the district has recorded more than 1,500 cases of pink eye. The localities with the most cases of pink eye are: Tinh Giang, Tinh Binh, Tinh Hiep, Tinh Phong, Tinh Son communes...
The number of cases of pink eye in the community continues to increase rapidly every day. Currently, the health center has directed commune health stations to coordinate with schools to implement preventive measures to limit the spread of the disease in schools and in the community.
Ms. Vuong Nghiem Nu, a medical staff at Nguyen Nghiem Primary School, Quang Ngai City, shared that as soon as the school year started, some classes reported that students had pink eye. So we promptly prevented the disease from spreading into an epidemic by coordinating with parents to implement epidemic prevention measures, such as: Telling children to wash their hands with soap regularly, not to rub their eyes, any student with pink eye must stay home from school until they are completely recovered to avoid infecting other students...
Schools have actively promoted ways to prevent and control the epidemic to parents through the school and class's zalo groups; reminded students of preventive measures and steps according to the recommendations of the health sector.

When children have red and swollen eyes, they should be taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment.

Statistics show that in June 2023, nearly 200 children with pink eye came to the Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for examination. By August, this number had increased to more than 300. The number of children in the first 10 days of September was much higher than in previous months. On average, the hospital received 40-50 children with symptoms of pink eye every day for examination and treatment, 3-4 times higher than normal days.
Doctor Le Thi Thao Nguyen, Interdisciplinary Specialist in Ophthalmology - Otorhinolaryngology - Maxillofacial Surgery (Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital) recommends that when children have symptoms of red, swollen eyes, watery eyes, and a lot of eye discharge, parents should take their children to medical facilities for examination and treatment. Avoid using folk remedies or self-medication, which can easily cause complications such as keratitis and corneal scarring, reducing children's vision.
