Horrific flash flood, more than 200 houses in a commune in Nghe An were severely damaged, hundreds of households lost all their property overnight

A terrible flash flood hit the border commune of My Ly (Nghe An) in the early morning of July 23, causing more than 200 houses to be severely damaged. People are facing the prospect of losing their homes and property overnight.

According to Mr. Luong Van Bay, Chairman of the People's Committee of My Ly Commune, the flood suddenly struck at 5:00 p.m. on July 22, with floodwaters pouring in from upstream, causing all 7 villages along the river in the commune to be submerged in water. It was not until 2:00 a.m. on July 23 that the floodwaters began to recede, leaving behind a scene of terrible devastation.

Initial statistics show that 231 houses were severely damaged, of which 109 houses collapsed completely, and 122 others suffered 50-70% damage. Notably, many public works such as the commune People's Committee headquarters, schools, and border posts were also deeply flooded and severely damaged.

Tien Phong Electronic Newspaper On the evening of July 23, Mr. Luong Van Bay - Chairman of the People's Committee of My Ly commune (Nghe An) said that the flood that just hit this commune was a historic flood, causing heavy damage to the people and the commune government. 1

Many households in My Ly commune have been left penniless as all their property was swept away or completely damaged. Currently, families who lost their homes are being temporarily evacuated to relatives’ homes, while local authorities and Border Guard forces are urgently assisting in cleaning up and stabilizing their lives.

A resident shared: "The water rose so quickly, we didn't have time to react. We only had time to run away, now we have nothing left to return home."

According to meteorological experts, the Central region is entering the rainy season, the risk of flash floods and landslides is always latent, especially in mountainous areas and border areas such as My Ly.

Nghe An authorities are coordinating with functional units to urgently warn people and at the same time deploy plans to evacuate households in low-lying areas to avoid risks.

Immediately after the flood receded, police, military and youth forces were present to help people clean up, provide food, drinking water and medical supplies.

Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has also directed emergency support for households with severe damage, and requested the Central Government to provide financial support so that people can soon stabilize their lives.
