Number of visitors on National Day decreased by nearly 20%

VnExpressVnExpress05/09/2023

During National Day, the whole country had 2.5 million tourists , down 17% over the same period in 2022 and equal to 34% of the April 30 holiday.

Compared to 7.3 million tourists on April 30, the total number of visitors on September 2 was nearly twice as low as 2.5 million. Compared to the same period last year, the number of visitors this year was also lower, down 17%. The two cities that welcomed the most visitors during this holiday were Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi , reaching 960,000 and 640,000 visitors, respectively. The average room occupancy rate at accommodation establishments was 55%, down 5% over the same period last year and equal to 79% compared to April 30.

The decrease in the number of visitors has led to a decrease in revenue. Many provinces and cities that earned thousands of billions from tourism revenue on April 30, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An, have all seen a decrease. Of these, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces have seen the sharpest decline, from VND2,800 and VND1,500 billion to VND663 and VND500 billion. Other famous destinations such as Phu Quoc and Khanh Hoa have also seen a decrease in revenue and number of visitors.

According to the National Tourism Administration, there were no serious incidents or problems affecting tourism activities nationwide during the September 2 holiday this year, and there was also a trend towards more economical holidays. People tightened their spending, cut travel costs, prioritized nearby travel, and shortened their vacation time.

One of the reasons for the low number of tourists this time is that many tourists have gone on vacation during the summer. Children are also preparing for the new school year, so families are limiting long or long trips. The weather in some destinations in coastal cities in the Central and Southern regions such as Da Nang, Binh Dinh, and Phu Quoc is not favorable due to the influence of storms or rain.

Ms. Nguyen Thu Truc, 42 years old, representative of a restaurant and bar in Duong To (Phu Quoc), said that she closed on September 2 because there were no customers. "Many people like me, waited until the holiday to welcome many customers. Who would have thought that the whole holiday would be so stormy and rainy," Ms. Truc said.

Due to the impact of Storm Sao La, the high-speed boat to Phu Quoc had to stop running from September 2nd until the afternoon of September 4th, affecting thousands of tourists coming to Phu Quoc by sea from Rach Gia and Ha Tien. The weather also caused tours to the island to be "completely deserted" during the holiday, according to a tour guide on the island.

It is expected that on April 30 and September 2, 2024, the number of tourists will continue to decrease because these holidays all take place in the middle of the week, so people will only have two days off.
