The Duke of Sussex, now 40, explained that the brothers were against the idea of their father marrying after he divorced his mother - Princess Diana - in 1996 and she died in 1997.

Camilla Parker Bowles, as the queen was known at the time, had an affair with Prince Charles during his first marriage. Princess Diana once famously said: "There were three people in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

Harry continued: "Willy and I agreed that Dad deserved better. He deserved a true companion. That's why when asked, Willy and I promised Dad that we would welcome Camilla into our family. The only thing we asked was that he not marry her."

"Dad didn't have to remarry, we begged. A wedding would be controversial, would stir up the press, would have the whole country, the whole world talking about Mum, comparing her to Camilla. Nobody wanted that," Harry wrote.

Prince Harry said his father did not respond, adding that Camilla "started playing the long game, a campaign against marriage".

More than 35 years after they first met, Prince Charles and Camilla announced their engagement in February 2005. The couple were legally married in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, followed by a religious blessing and prayer service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on April 9, 2005.

Prince Harry and Prince William were among the few guests chosen to attend both events, although their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, only appeared at the second event. As head of the Church of England, Queen Elizabeth II felt it was inappropriate for her to attend the civil wedding of two divorced people.

Although Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip chose not to have a civil wedding, they showed their support for Charles and Camilla's marriage by attending the religious blessing and reception at Windsor Castle afterwards. Camilla, known as the Duchess of Cornwall, finally fulfilled Queen Elizabeth II's "sincere wish" to become Queen Consort when Charles ascends the throne in September 2022.

Speaking exclusively to People about Spare at the time of its release, the Duke of Sussex shared what he hopes his family will learn from the memoir.

"I don't want to tell anyone what people think about the book, including my family. The book and the truths in it are in many ways a continuation of my own mental health journey. It's an honest account of my life - the good, the bad and everything in between," Prince Harry said in 2023.
