Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Chairman of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art, commented: From 2012 to now, the Council has organized 10 rounds of selection and awarding; rewarding publishing and press agencies with outstanding achievements in propaganda, promotion, and creation of literature and art - a very important and especially delicate field of culture. Not only this year, before that, there were a number of awarding seasons without works winning level A. The Council decided to award level B to aim for true and convincing value instead of awarding a few questionable levels A.
In 2023, 118 works (including 34 books and 84 articles) were submitted by agencies and units to the Council for consideration and award. All three fields, including: General theory; literary theory and criticism; theory and criticism of art forms, have good, elaborate, serious works with scientific and practical value; promptly address practical issues in literary and artistic life, have the effect of orienting theoretical and creative work; fight against erroneous and distorted views in literary and artistic life.
Among the total of 25 awarded works, there are works that breathe life, suitable for the diversity of readers, such as: "The art of decorating village communal houses in Binh Duong " (Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep); "Nguyen Binh - The national soul shines on the paper" (poet Nguyen Si Dai); the group of articles: "Coming to good poetry and misconceptions", "Strangeness in poetry", "Tan Trao moon, a new look on the old foundation" (researcher Ha Quang)... Notably, this season has recognized the efforts of young critics, such as: Nguyen Hoai Nam with "Neo chu", Do Anh Vu with "May trong day coc", Hoang Dang Khoa with "Nhung to sach"... The authors have in common that they all work in press and literary agencies, in charge of columns related to the field of theory and criticism of literature and art, so their works are not only academic but also highly interactive and flexible.
Despite making many impressions, the gap in theory and criticism of literature and art is always mentioned after each season. Experts believe that the writing force in the field is still thin, not commensurate with the vibrant development of literary life as well as not having a strong impact on the life and perception of the public. The basic reasons leading to this situation are: Lack of specialized training facilities; no important channels to disseminate works; limited awareness and responsibility of the management team and experts in the field; low level of reception among readers...
In the 2021-2026 term, the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art has developed working regulations; researched and identified key tasks to concretize the Party's policies, viewpoints, tasks and solutions on the development of culture, literature and art. Accordingly, in order for works to enter life and have a positive and strong impact, the Council will well implement a number of key tasks: Continue to innovate methods, improve quality and efficiency; strengthen coordination, focus on research, and scientifically and thoroughly explain major issues, such as: methods of operation of literary and art associations, training and fostering of staff, remuneration mechanisms, market development, promotion of literature and art; absorb the quintessence of foreign literary and artistic thought and the role of Marxist literary and artistic thought today; improve education and aesthetic orientation for the public...
In the journey of integrating works of literary and artistic theory and criticism into contemporary life, the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism has "electronicized" its publications, launched the electronic journal Literary Theory and Criticism, and linked with many other websites such as those of the Vietnam Writers' Association, local literary and artistic associations, schools, etc. to regularly publish in-depth research articles. The Council has organized many training courses for a wide audience of reporters and editors working in central and local press and publishing agencies. The Council plans to expand training for students and trainees in the field of critical theory with high quality, selected from schools and training units.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky emphasized: “Deeply aware of the viewpoints, orientations and policies of the Party and State, over the past 20 years, the Council has promoted theoretical research and summarized practical experiences, while attaching importance to training and fostering to improve awareness, knowledge and skills for the staff working in directing and managing cultural and artistic activities.
Along with the review and awarding activities, every year, right from the beginning of the year, the Council widely announces the reception of good quality manuscripts or detailed outlines from authors nationwide for review, and can support publishing costs. This direction contributes to motivating and encouraging theoretical and critical writers, especially young writers, to take care of nurturing and building a team for many years to come.
The Council particularly values the academic quality, novelty, approach and research methods of the authors when addressing specific issues, phenomena, trends or literary and artistic cases, especially the contribution of the award-winning work to creative practice; theoretical research, criticism; promotion and reception of the value of the work.
