Halle Bailey's hair was a big focus for the costume and beauty department in the Little Mermaid remake; as Halle Bailey wanted to keep her natural long hair while playing the Disney princess Ariel.

That's the job of Oscar-nominated hair department head Camille Friend. Friend has a busy schedule, most recently working on Lupita Nyong'o's hair in the blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, so she has the experience to transform Halle Bailey into a red-haired Ariel.
Speaking to Variety , Friend said the biggest problem the stylists faced was hair, as the Disney mermaid was always depicted with her signature red hair. "I went to meet Halle's family. They're a nice, gentle family. Her mother is a woman of faith. I began to understand who Halle was and why it was so important for her to keep her hair natural," the stylist said.

When it came to figuring out the process, Friend made sure not to cut any of Bailey's hair, not even using a wig. "I knew a wig wouldn't work. Halle Bailey's hair is waist-length, so putting a wig on her would look crazy," Friend concluded.
Friend used a 30-inch long, styled and dyed hair set with a keratin-repairing formula. She used a total of three shades of red to "magically" transform her hair into the mermaid Ariel.
"The crew spent at least $150,000 (over VND3.5 billion) because we had to disassemble and redo it. The damaged part seemed impossible to reuse, forcing us to start over from scratch. It was a long process," Friend revealed.

The stylist also said that for the underwater scenes, the team added loose hair to protrude from Bailey's original hair, and the hair needed to look like it could "dance" when Bailey was underwater.
To get the perfect look for The Little Mermaid , Halle Bailey sat for 12 to 14 hours while her hair was curled. The film has grossed about $185 million worldwide since its release on May 26.
