Chieng Son commune was established on the basis of merging Chieng Son and Chieng Xuan communes, with midland and semi-mountainous terrain, an average altitude of 800-1,000m; cool climate all year round, high humidity, suitable for developing clean and high-tech agriculture, such as growing vegetables, flowers, temperate fruit trees. Exploiting potential and advantages, the commune focuses on directing people to apply scientific and technical advances in production, improving quality, productivity, and economic efficiency. At the same time, strengthening production, processing, and consumption links, gradually forming concentrated commodity production areas. Product promotion and introduction activities are of interest; some key local products have been recognized as meeting OCOP standards. Currently, the commune has over 1,700 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds, of which more than 1,000 hectares are for harvest; 2 OCOP products include dried plums and dried mangoes.
With savings of more than 2 billion VND, in 2021, Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa's family in Ward 30/4 built a 2,000 m² factory and invested in a fruit drying line. Ms. Hoa shared: Every year, the family buys about 200 tons of plums and mangoes from local people for drying. The two products of dried plums and dried mangoes have been recognized as OCOP products. The family's products are ordered by customers through websites, stores, and supermarkets introducing OCOP products in and outside the province, with revenue reaching about 5 billion VND/year; creating jobs for 5 regular workers, with an income of 6-7 million VND/person/month and dozens of seasonal workers.
Coming to Suoi Quanh village, walking among the vast green of fruit trees, it is hard to imagine that this place used to be a barren hilly land, where farmers' lives were hard for many years due to low-efficiency in growing food crops. A typical example is Tien Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, with 5 members, growing more than 50 hectares of oranges, longans, mangoes, and grapefruits; of which, 20 hectares meet VietGAP standards. The annual fruit output is more than 400 tons, with a revenue of 10 billion VND/year.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tien Thanh Cooperative, said: The Cooperative has established regulations and requires all members to take care of fruit trees according to technical procedures, ensuring food safety and hygiene. At the same time, it proactively connects with businesses and units that provide fertilizers, seedlings, fruit tree care techniques and consume output products. Thanks to the strict production process, absolutely not using chemical pesticides, the Cooperative's products are chosen and trusted by many customers.
Over the past years, Chieng Son commune has formed specialized tea growing areas, with nearly 340 hectares of tea, the total output of fresh tea buds reaching nearly 5,000 tons per year, with an average income of 70 million VND/ha/year, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and improving the lives of the people. Mr. Nguyen Van Khiem, Director of Chieng Ve Tea Joint Stock Company, shared: The company maintains a raw material area of more than 300 hectares, mainly Shan Tuyet tea in Chieng Son commune, assigned to contracted households for care. In response to the increasing demands of the market, the company invested 10 billion VND to install a new modern tea processing line, improve product quality, improve working conditions for staff and workers, and increase labor productivity.
Entering a new phase, with expanded development space, the Party Committee of Chieng Son commune has chosen breakthroughs: Focusing on developing agricultural economy associated with tourism development; enhancing the brand of agricultural products, increasing competitiveness in the market, at the same time, developing production chains, creating stable output for agricultural products.
Comrade Vu Thanh Hai, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Son commune, said: To concretize the breakthrough, the commune continues to propagate and mobilize people to change the structure of crops and livestock associated with the application of scientific and technological advances in production. Forming concentrated specialized production areas, putting into production new high-yield varieties. Organizing and implementing well policies to support agriculture, farmers and rural areas. Linking agricultural production with eco-tourism, with the key tourist destination being Pha Luong Mountain, tea hills, fruit gardens... to increase people's income, protect the landscape and environment, towards green and sustainable tourism in the future.
The correct choice of development direction by the Party Committee and government and changes in thinking and working methods of the people have contributed to improving people's lives, helping the commune sustainably reduce poverty, and building Chieng Son into a bright spot in the border area.
