A camera trap set in a dense forest in Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Que Phong District, Nghe An Province, has captured the image of a wild animal for the first time. It was a strange leopard cat walking silently in the night. The camera trap also captured images of other animals listed in the Red Book.

On November 7, speaking with Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh - Director of Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Que Phong district (Nghe An province) said that through setting camera traps, the unit has discovered many rare wild animals.

Specifically, camera traps are placed at the management and protection stations of Thong Thu 1, Thong Thu 2, Dong Van 2 and Na Chang forests, Que Phong district, Nghe An.

Rare wildlife species have been recorded in the Vietnam Red Book and the World Red Book - IUCN.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh added that the rare wildlife species recorded include the common muntjac, wild boar, short-tailed porcupine, monkey, golden monkey, mountain goat, and striped civet.

Notably, for the first time, Pu Hoat Nature Reserve recorded the image of an individual leopard cat (prionailurus bengalensis).

The image of a leopard cat was captured by a camera trap while it was walking silently in the dark of the forest.

Mr. Sinh said: "Leopard cats, also known as wild cats or clouded cats, are endangered and rare wild animals belonging to group IIB. Depending on the location, leopard cats have different names. Adult leopard cats weigh 3 to 5 kg, have a body length of 450 to 550 mm and a tail length of 250 to 290 mm."

"Camera trap survey methods are widely used in biodiversity studies in Vietnam.

This method is especially useful in detecting rare species that are difficult to detect by direct observation.

The camera trap can automatically record images of all animals weighing more than 500g moving in front of the sensor.

This method helps to accumulate a large amount of data in remote areas with difficult terrain. Camera traps help provide information on the distribution, behavior and correlation between species and human and natural factors," added the director of Pu Hoat Nature Reserve.

To date, Pu Hoat Nature Reserve has recorded more than 2,420 species and subspecies belonging to 885 genera, 208 families of 6 phyla of vascular plants.

Of these, 130 species are at risk of extinction, with 112 species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 25 species listed in Government Decree 32 and 15 species listed in the IUCN Red Book.

Pu Hoat Nature Reserve is one of three core areas of the Western Nghe An Biosphere Reserve.

In 2007, Pu Hoat Nature Reserve was recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Pu Hoat Nature Reserve has an area of over 85,000 hectares, spanning 88 sub-areas in 9 communes of Que Phong district.

The discovery of a leopard cat in Pu Hoat Nature Reserve is a positive sign for biodiversity conservation in Vietnam.

The conservation of rare animals and wildlife listed in the Red Book at Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Que Phong District, Nghe An Province not only helps maintain the ecosystem but also contributes to the conservation of world natural heritage.

In the future, sustainable development plans at the reserve will make an important contribution to the protection of rare animal species and the preservation of the endemic ecosystem of Nghe An mountainous region.
