The Argentina national team's squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile (June 5) and Colombia (June 10) has been announced by the Argentine Football Federation with 28 preliminary players.
The highlight of the list is the return of Messi, who missed the matches against Uruguay (1-0 win in Montevideo) and Brazil (4-1 win at the Monumental Stadium) due to injury.

Man Utd striker Alejandro Garnacho, who was left out of previous matches for tactical reasons, has also been named in Lionel Scaloni's Argentina squad.
The list also includes stars such as Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan), Nicolas Otamendi (Benfica), and Atletico Madrid players Julian Alvarez, Nahuel Molina, Giuliano Simeone, Rodrigo De Paul and Angel Correa.
Notably, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Montiel were left out due to injury, while defenders Marcos Acuna and German Pezzella were also left out of the squad by the Argentine tactician.
With 31 points, Argentina leads the South American rankings and has won a ticket to the 2026 World Cup from the previous round, 8 points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.
Meanwhile, Chile are at the bottom of the table with only 10 points and are in crisis. Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca has not been able to revive the team, facing the risk of missing the third consecutive World Cup (after 2018 and 2022). An Argentina victory could see Chile eliminated completely.
Argentina's home game against Colombia will be a rematch of the 2024 Copa America final in the United States, which the Argentines won. The two teams last met in September last year, with Colombia winning 2-1 in Barranquilla, with goals from Yerson Mosquera and James Rodríguez after Nicolas Gonzalez equalised.
After two matches against Chile and Colombia, Argentina will close out their qualifying campaign with a home game against Venezuela and an away game against Ecuador. Notably, Venezuela (under the guidance of Argentina coach Fernando Batista) is ranked 7th and has a historic chance to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.
